Help.

In Chester PA

Got gas, in gear. Tranny made a horrible noise. Like a bunch of mares in a can.

Not sure if tranny or rear spline failure.

Help!

Not sure.

My GF is picking me up. So I can get home.

I called my mechanic buddy, to see about a yank and drop off...keeps going to VMail

I think I can get this home soon...if I have to leave in parking lot, I can live with that for a few days if need be.

What could be the problem is my main concern. How do I fix? What am I looking at

Of I had to guess. Spline failure.

Not real good with tools, but understand concepts pretty well and can relay to mechanic what to look for.

These transmitters are pretty bullet-proof. It sounds as if you have a u-joint or drive shaft/cup failure. Not too bad a job. You'll probably need to get the bike home or to your buddy.

My first concern would certainly be to get the bike transported to a safe place.

Yes even if you have to pay big $ for towing the peace of mind would be worth it to me!

Likely drive shaft/pinion cup failure. Only a couple hundred bucks to fix.

Thanks.

Guy picking it up this morning with a flat bed.

240.00 delivered.

My mechanic....had a hip replacement surgery yesterday. So going to be a month or so before can be addressed.

Time to save up for the fix.

Thanks for everyone's support.

Driveshaft and pinion cup are the parts you're likely to need. Well under $200...it's a pretty easy fix...maybe an hour labor over a rear tire change...

Does it sound like the bike in the video linked to here?:
http://vimeo.com/m/74061559
If so, that bike had a failure of the splines connecting the drive shaft to the pinion cup.

Man that video is hard to watch. Did he really have to go through the gears a second time? Ouch. I think if mine sounded like that I would stop after second gear.....Ok, maybe third.  crazy2

Pretty easy. Less than $150 in parts, took me an hour and a half but some do it faster, I'm sure.

I'm agree,, there is a time to stop and address a problem,, he didn't know what he was dealing with. I have seen too many people playing with a damaged machine only to cause a catastrophic failure when a simple repair was all that was needed at first.

This is where I would start, about $100 plus shipping at partzilla

Honda 40201-MZ0-A00 SHAFT, PROPELLER

Honda 40221-MB0-000 RING, STOPPER

Honda 41410-MN5-000 JOINT, PINION (pinion cup)

Honda 91261-ME9-005 OIL SEAL (27X43X7)

Probably a good idea to remove the u-joint for inspection now while it's this far apart. I've not had to remove a pinion cup yet so I don't know if this is everything.

Thanks to all for your help, and offer of assistance.

WHen I had "Belle" towed to my mechanics house (retired and works on a handful of friends bikes) he had quite lieterally just had his hip replaced that morning. I was expecting it to take a month or more for recovery... then a month or more to get the strength to work on Belle.

Well, two weeks in to recovery... he had Belle all apart, and diagnosed the Axle / Pinion cup as the culprit.

As of this week, Belle was back, fixed, new shoes, new brakes, polished, fluids changed... and for a decent price I might add. One I was willing to pay, and did not break the bank. I gave him a few bucks extra and said take the wife out to a good dinner (there was enough for a very good dinner for two at a nice place).

With the help of this board, and a fried with a wrench (and a new hip) we were able to get he all back together and on the road. For the record, he was the one that convinced me to go for a Valkyrie in stead of grafting larger carbs and a Vmax pumpkin on to my 96 Yamaha Royal Star...

HE is looking for a bike to trike... he has asked me more questions about the valk thaan I can enoumerate here... looks like we might have another convert from the land of V twins...

THanks !
