I have a chance to get a really good deal on some hardly used chrome 12" Progressive 440's (non HD).  I'm 6'2 and 255lbs, with a 31" inseam and I ride mostly solo on my Standard without bags.  I know 13" is the OEM shock size, but I read that Progressive Shocks don't sag as much so I'm hoping 12" 440's will be good.  I also plan on doing progressive front fork springs.  I recently added Ultimate King Big Boy seats which raised me an inch, and I don't really want to be raised any more.  What do you think, will 12" 440's work well, and do you think I should send them in for HD springs or will that be too stiff and jarring of a ride?  Thanks in advance for any input.

Daddie O..

I just replaced my Progressive 412's after breaking the shock on the tore up Highway 99 on my way home after work.

Although Progressive only shows the 412, 412HD and the 416 air shocks..
I went with the redesigned 444HD 12.5" that are listed for the VTX1800.

Im 295lbs 6-2", ride about 8k a year...

ITS THE BEST RIDE EVER!!! is whole new experience for me, maybe cause the old 412 sucked so back, unloading in the turn.. probably why the outer side of my rear tire is cupping again.

12" standards should work if you do the cage mod and stay with the stock size rear tire.

Hope its a killer deal...!

If at all possible, get the original sales receipt from the seller.  These shocks have a lifetime fix or replace free warranty but only if you have the original sales receipt...

Before you send them to get HD springs I would recommend riding on them for a while to see how you like the standard springs.  I have the standard springs on mine and they are just right when set to the third notch.

What is the cage mod?

I'm not the one to whom you addressed the question, but I believe he was referring to the nut cage mod.  That mod is the process of removing the metal cage inside the fender that holds the nut that is part of the fender mount support.  That removal gains you a little bit of room to stop a tire from rubbing.

I have the cheepo 412 hd model I don't think they make a huge difference without the hd maybe with a passenger it might I ride solo so don't know
www.xchoppers.com has a bigger supply with more options than other places they sell VTX and Valkyrie and vtx both use the same shock they have from 10 inches to 13 inches and half sizes also

Daddie O,

If you need I can do the Nut Cage mod for you in 10-15 minutes Or help you do it yourself in 15-20 minutes...... Just about how long it takes to get the bike stable on jack stand just how I prefer to work on a Valk in that position.

Although if you have a small grinder something like a dremel tool you can probably figure it out in less than 30 minutes on your own.
Text me next week if you need too. Cool

If the deal is cheap enough I would go for it worst case scenario, you don't like them then post them up for sale....

Thanks Matt.  I bought them, and they arrived looking brand spanking new in their original box with all the bushings.  I called up Progressive and their engineers suggested I send them in and have them fitted with HD springs based on my weight (255lbs) and the fact that I occasionally ride two up.  They said they will do that for $30 all together including return shipping.  The 440's I got have polished aluminum end caps and adjusters and I asked if I wanted those swapped out for chrome would they do it and they said no problem.  $12.57 for each bottom cap, and $32.74 for each chrome adjuster.  So $120.62 all together.  I got a good price on the 440's, so I think I can swing it.

I'm using the 13" 440s with HD springs with no preload and it's just right for me at 210 lbs. I like a tight ride and with the wife's extra 100 lbs it's no problem. Lighter than my weight and I wouldn't use the HD springs. I usually run the Valk Std naked.

I run my Standard naked too.  Do you think the 12" will lower it too much?  I do have Ultimates which raised my seating position 1"
