My Valk whines between 1800 2000 rpm, whether its in gear or in neutral.its got to be coming off the engine, could it be the alternator, since it drive comes from the engine, and has nothing to do with any tranny gears.i would hate to order whole alternator,if all i need is the gear giving the alternator drive,or am i completely wrong with that assessment.Thats why i am turning to the learned for advise. Thanks

Try to really locate the noise. The alternator could certainly whine if a bearing is going bad. But, check to make sure its not coming from the front cover. I don't know how long you've owned this monster and whether you're used to 'normal' noises yet. The timing belts have a tendency to 'whine' at that speed.

First of all, woodiecat, welcome to the asylum.  You're gonna like it here.............  no really!

I am with Patrick, how long have you owned the Phat Gurl?   If you are new to the Valk world, there are gear noises and the clutch makes noise when you release it while idleing (sp?) and revving the engine.

My 99 Interstate has very loud gear noise.  Louder than any other Valk I have been around.  Mine has 109,000 miles on her and will last for another 200k.

If she runs good and pulls hard with no vibration, enjoy the new ride.

Ride Safe Brother.

+1 on the whining, that Valkyrie will do more whining than you are doing about the whining. But, on the other hand, it won't quit whining nor will it let you down because of the whining. Put 4qts of Mobil 1 15-50 in it on your next oil change. Jimmy's whine, I have one that whines and one that doesn't, figure that out.

There is a noticeable sound difference between having a transmission cover set and not.
If you've got a set installed, try taking them off and seeing if that seems to be it.

I have had the Valk since 1997.i bought it the first year it came out.i have a couple of bikes so i dont put too many miles on them.,the mileage is 65k.the noise just showed up last year coming home from Rolling Thunder. Its not too annoying,I just turn up the ipod.It could be the timing belts.i will take off the cover and run the motor to see if its coming from there.might need to change the belts.Thank for all your replies.

If it is coming from the timing cover and has recently started making the noise, then it could be one of the idler bearings.

I use to run with Shell Rotella T6 5w40, but when I switched to Mobil 1 15w50 full synthetic it was quiter and shifted better.  cooldude

Hay, Patrick might be onto something here...  I have heard of idler bearings failing.  Not often, but have heard of it.

The idler bearing on mine made a high pitch noise when it was going out. If they spin freely you should think about rebuilding them. It's easy to do and a lot cheaper than new OEM prices. A search here should bring up a thread where I rebuilt mine. Others here have also done this rebuild. I currently have 4,000 miles on a rebuilt idler and no problems to date.

I notice the whine more when I'm using my windshield . These bikes do make a lot of unusual noises ,took me awhile to get used to it. . Going to try Mobil 1 next oil change.

Take a big ol' screwdriver, place the handle at your ear, then move the tip around the engine to locate the whine while parked in neutral, and increasing revs.  At least you will eliminate, or maybe point to the transmission as the source.
