I know this has been beat to death but I am finally going ahead with a desmog on my 2000 IS. I have the freeze plugs but what exactly are the "two 5/32 vacuum plugs for intake 3 and 4"? Are they the two little plates with gaskets that have two bolt holes in them that are pictured in the Quexpress procedure or are they something else?

3 and 4 makes it sound that way...

I remember how much fun it was making those little plates out of aluminum bar stock from
Lowes, clamped into some vice grips, using a dremel tool...  crazy2

I tend to think, the 5/32 caps are the rubber caps for the vacuum ports at the carbs, where you remove the vac hoses during the desmog. Without a cruise control, and with stock petcock, you have only 1 vac hose after the desmog (petcock connection). All other vac ports at the carbs are capped with rubber caps. If you don´t have enough caps, you can make them from short pieces of vac hose, a bit silicone, and a small bolt....

If you want good looking, high quality vaccuum plugs for the carbs, contact Redeye at:
http://home.everestkc.net/richyrich/

You will need a total of five.  You should also order their vaccuum line that runs from the fuel petcock to the #6 carb.

As for the chrome tubes that run from the PAIR valve to the heads, I did not remove mine.  I just plugged them where they came out of the PAIR valve.  No need for freeze plugs.  I have been running like this for over 10,000 miles.  No problem.

Also, if Obama, Pelosi, and the Smog Police make you put your smog stuff back on someday, you will have the tubes intact.  cooldude

See post further up.  Mine just passed the AZ emissions test de-smogged.  I always suspected that it didn't really do anything, it was just to please some bureaucrat.  That confirmed it.

These are rubber vacuum plugs similar to the following.

You can find these at auto parts stores.

I did the same thing, used ball bearings that were a tight fit in the hose connections to the pair valves, the removed the vacuum hoses from the carbs and capped them. also plugged the 2 connections that go to the air box. makes it a simple process to reverse if the dot gods decide to start checking smog equipment.  been running that way for the last 12,000 miles
