Here's the story. my '97 sat around for about 2 months while I fiddle farted around with getting the tank re-cleaned & coated when more rust popped up inside. Local radiator shop did a poor job relining the tank this time & delayed the job again. However, I got lucky & scored another red & white tank with no rust from Flea-bay. Finally got it all back together with no leaks  cooldude first shot. Yeaaa!

Anyhow here's the problem. RH front cylinder dead, will not idle at all but runs like a Valkyrie at WOT.
I have about 2 gallons of gas in now with a full bottle of Techron dumped in. Rode it about 5 miles so I know the Techron is mixed in good. Very slight improvement in the 5 miles.
Not looking forward to pulling the carbs again   tickedoff. Should I keep on fartin' around with cleaners & such or am I screwed?
I have a hard time believing two months of sitting could cause such trouble. It was running fine before the tank cleaning. Last rust in tank incident caused a hydro lock {with no damage} so I felt it was necessary to fix the tank.
What direction should I go?

Sounds more like some of the rust got into the jets. Mine has sat that long before and no problem whatsoever.

Hate to say it make sure its the carb first then don't play with it. There is nothing so disappointing as thinking your going for a ride only to find out she doesn't purr like a kitten.

How did the strainer on the petcock look? If the strainer looked really bad with the rust then I would be worried about some passing into the carbs.

Strainer looked very clean, also added an inline filter 35,000 miles ago when I had the first rust incident. The de-rusting was a preventative move, I'm fairly sure the rust didn't get through to the carbs as it was running fine when I parked it. The fuel had the turpentine smell coming from the carbs. Still don't understand how 8-9 weeks of sitting can turn gas so nasty.
I guess what I'm asking for is any tips on chemical combos & procedures as I suspect it's bad gas related. If I thought it was definitely rust blockage I would have gone straight to carb teardown.
Been there & done that... did not enjoy it.  Shocked

Just a shot in the dark... which coil fires the RH front cylinder, and what other cylinder does it fire? Maybe I knocked something loose while working on it. Just thought of that.

I was thinking along those lines too as it runs well at high RPM but will not idle. Farts & pops all the way up the RPM range until WOT.

I would go straight to the good stuff. Chemtool B-12. I have not found anything that works better. Run the bike through two tanks of gas, 1/2 can of B-12 in each tank. Try to keep the revs between 1000 and 2500 rpm. Slowly accelerate in each gear to draw the gas through the jets.

Chemtool is also my favorite, but don't let it sit around as it wil eat rubber. Put it in and ride it out. I usually use a full can to a tank.

TT - I work with carbs pretty much on a daily basis. Usually when a circuit is not able to flow any fuel (plugged completely) the cleaner will not work. If it is able to flow any at all it will work. From the sound of it you may be going into the carbs.
Having said that, since it has only been sitting a couple months, you may be able to pull the mixture screw completely out and use pressurized cleaner to see if you can clear the circuit, then the cleaner in the tank may get in there and finish up. You can also use the pressurized cleaner through the front of the carb using the air bleed for that circuit and leave the mixture screw in place. Little more work the second way though - but hey, if it doesn't work at least you will be closer to having the carbs off!

OK  ... I gotta ask.  Which B12 y'all buyin'?  I see about 3 different B12 products that COULD be what folks're runnin', but don't want to buy the wrong setup.

Thanks,

This is Berryman's ad for B12. Usually under $4.00 at Wal-Mart.
