I know the Golding 1500 final drives have the final drive spline and ring gear center that can be pressed out and used in the Valk ring gear.  However: Has anyone measured the the pinion gear and ring gear dimensions to see if they will fit in the Valk?  If they would fit, might be a cheap way to help the gearing and fuel economy.

The ring gear is so close that I don't think I could tell them apart sitting next o
each other. But when I put a wing ring gear into an open valkyrie final drive, it
wouldn't spin free...

Was that using the matching Wing pinion gear or just sitting the Wing ring gear against the Valkyrie pinion gear?

I think he means that the "ring" in the ring gear is of a slightly larger diameter than the Valk.  Sounds like he set the ring onto the Valk housing and didn't have to press it to get it on, so it spun.

Just what it sounded like to me.

I had the Valkyrie case open, and both the ring gears at hand... I could set the Valkyrie
ring gear into the case and turn the pinion cup, and all seemed good. When I set
the identical looking Wing ring gear in the case, it fit, but stuff dragged when I
turned the pinion cup.

But ring and pinion's come as a matched set.  I wouldn't necessarily expect the Valk pinion to work with the Wing ring gear unless they are indeed identical parts.    I would be curious if the matched ring and pinion gear from a Wing would fit in the Valk case and work properly.   Hmmmmm....

Has anybody tried that?

Not saying I would do it, I happen to like the gearing of the Valk as is but it would be interesting nonetheless.

It might merely be a case of wrong shimming. Every time you change out the ring and pinion, you have to take that into consideration and shim accordingly. If you just changed the ring gear to test fit it, it's an entirely different unit and hasn't been shimmed for that particular gear. It may work with a matching pinion and proper shimming.

The snout on the pinion gear that fits into the bearing, item #1 in the fische, is smaller on the GW than on the Valk. The bore in the final drive housing that accepts the bearing is the same size though. You could use the GW pinion gear snout bearing but getting the old bearing out of the housing is not easy.

The ring gears are virtually identical. I have tried the GW ring gear in a Valk housing with the Valk pinion gear (just to see), and it rotated without any problem. If it does hang up, it is probably an issue with not enough back lash.

I was under the impression that the final drive ratio on the wing was a taller (lower numerical) ration, so it stands to reason we could improve our fuel mileage using them. I know there were changes made  (ujoint upgrade to a valk size) in the later models, maybe the pinion was beefed up as well.  ???? My 98 GW seems to accelerate as well as the valk but does lack roll on power in the higher gears.

This is a very interesting topic, I'm enjoying reading what everyone is posting on it.

I don't think you'd necessarily see a mileage increase.   The "Mario Overdrive Transmission Gear Set" did not seem to fulfill that promise.   BigBF did extensive testing and that theory did not seem to hold up in his opinion.

I have a '91 and a '96 GW Final Drive. They both have the same gear ratio as the Valk. The same number of teeth on the pinion gear and ring gear. I believe the different ratios are in the transmisison.
