A couple of weeks back I memtioned having a small oil leak coming out of the waterpump at 207K miles.  So, I decided that it would be a pretty straight forward job to just install a new pump and it would have been except that one of the long 6mm bolts (upper one) that holds the pump to the transmission cover would not come out.  It finally broke off!!  I drilled a hole in it and used a size #1 "easy out", bolt would not move. I then used some light oil and a heat gun and got it pretty hot, the bolt still would not move. I heated and cooled the area several times, then decided to let it soak over night. Next day I broke the #1 easy out and decided to go up a size to a #2 easy out. I've "tapped" with a hammer, cussed and prayed. Finally, the #2 easyout broke off in the hole!!  I figured I'd just bite the bullet and buy a new cover (quote was $300. for new cover, gasket and tax!!), then have a real mechanic R&R the cover. My mechanical  capabilities are not up to taking the chance of pulling off the cover and gettin' in any deeper.

Is there a cahnce that someone on the board might have a wrecked engine and would part with a cover??

Anyone got a cover or suggestions?

TIA

Thanx, Jeff.  You're right it's about $80.  less.  Still, if I can find a good condition used transmission cover, I'd be even happier.

Can you drill out the bolt out and use a Helicoil?

Not only is the bolt still in the hole, the broken off "easy out" is in there too.  I don't think I can drill into the hardened steel easyout, at least not with any of the bits I have.  I'm afraid to pull off the cover myself to take it to a shop because I don't know what all is attached etc. to the other side that I might not be able to put back together.

I've got to leave for work now.  Will come back to follow up the afternoon.  Hopefully  someone will have a good cover to offer.

I had one of the alternator mounting bolts break.  I used the Dremel tool with a small tungston bit to bore through the broken bolt, then cut the bolt longways in half just through to the case threads.  Used a pin punch sharpened to a chisel point to break the bolt, removed both halves and retapped the threads to clean them up.  It took a couple hours, but it worked great.

Thanx Jay, but I don't think that will work for me as the harden steel "easy out" broke off down in the 6mm retaining bolt.  And, it broke at an angle, so trying to drill it or pretty much of anything would seem (to me) to be unworkable. I think that a good machine shop could get it out and either retap the hole, but as I said I might not be able to put it back together.  That's why I was hoping to find a good used tranny cover (costing a considerable amt. less that a new cover) then get a Honda mechanic to do the cover exchange and then I'd put the new water pump etc back on.
Thanx for the suggestion.

I went ahead and ordered the tranny cover, some O-rings and the oil filter boss and will have a Honda tech. R&R the cover only.  I'll then install the new water pump and button her up.  This is turning out to be pretty pricy just to stop a couple of drops of oil!
