Had my carbs rebuilt in the spring as the bike had sat for awhile.  2000 Std., 25k miles.  It continued to sit after that until just now.  It wasn't running great. Left side had a lot of pops, backfires.  Idled about 300 rpm.  It has been desmogged.  I took all the intakes off so I could adjust the carbs as it seemed to run really rich.  They had adjusted them to 3 turns out, I adjusted them to 2.25 turns out.  Snugged all the bolts and screws up, tightened the exhaust nuts, runs much better, but still have some popping out the left side.  Desmogged, so shouldn't be any vacuum leaks.  Tightened up the intake and exhaust fasteners, so I wouldn't think that would be the cause.  What else could be causing it?

try tightening the exhaust headers up, but carefully the torque setting is like 8 lbs. then try tightening the rubber intake flanges, that said, mine pops on the right side, always has, so I consider it charm

If it ran good after carbs were rebuilt, you need to start with a can of fuel injector cleaner per tankful of gas. Do that a few times and If that doesn't work your looking at carbs being rebuilt again.

Once you adjusted the pilots to 2.25 turns to get rid of that rich smell, did you resync the carbs?
