I got an uncle that is 80 yrs old.   He has ridden BMW motorcycles all his life.......and has always been a long distance rider.   The last couple yrs he has fallen over in the drive and at hotels on the road because he couldn't get his leg high enough to get over the bike.......so he sold his old Beemer and bought a Honda Silverwing......step through.....problem solved.    He just loves it.    At 80 yrs old he left Houston last Friday morning to go to the Beemer rally in the north east....I think North Carolina.   He emailed me yesterday and said::::::

left my driveway about 7 am friday morning..up thru lufkin and marshall and sreveport monroe to jackson, mississippi...492 miles...hot....left Jackson saturday morning and decided to ride the tracxe all the way to Nashville...long ass way at 50 m ph..but once in a whnile you can cheat....can't remember when i enjoyed anything as much as that...no trucks blowing you around....almost no traffice...sometimes `15-20 miles withou seeing anyone else...and if someone passed me i would latch on to them and let them run fast than the speed limit....it really get beautiful the closer you get nashville....just big long swqeepers...one after another....got into Nashivle saturday afternoon at the wrong time...worn out ..no patience...so paaid ONE HUNDRED TWNETY NINE DOLLARS FOR A snuggling MOTEL ROOM.... but I was thru...and it was almost walking distance to grand old opry old building....all four shows for saturday night sold out....so took cab to tootsies...famous bveer joing and  the street so crowded you couldn't walk..got cab back to motel and put it to bed....out of Nashville sunday morning about 8 am....damn near drown in thuder storm...took out my  trusty walmart rainsuit out of it's package and put it on...it works but i look like the michelin man....waaaaayyy to big...got to exchange it....really got dangerous because a couple times i could not see and worried if the guy behind me could see me....let me tell  if you have never ridden interstqate 40 from knoxville thru the moutains to ashville north carolina...what a road....into to reasonable motel with ihop and allplebees next door in ashville....lay on my butt and restged monday...like a big old frong...sleep couple hours watch  barney fife...sleep couple of hours....left asheville this morning after loosing almost 45 inuntes lost aas a goose....try9ng to get on corredct road out of town....just gave up and stgarted to run the blue ridge parkway but hell i have done that two three times....FINALLY got on the correct road I-26 west...about 60 miles of four lane thru the mountains again...just great riding...oh yeah 58 degrees when i got on the bike...me with one long sleeve shirt....got into room in  kingsport just off i-81 at noon...went out to camp grounds looked around came back....looking for thrunderstgorms friday and staurday.....keep you postged...ride safe...

Paw Paw bought his first bike when he was in his 80s: 1983 GL500 Silverwing with the bags and the works. Dad took him to the local school on the weekends and tried to teach him to ride, but it bothered his hemroids. Instead of giving up completely he traded that bike to my wife for a golf-cart (which we swapped her bike for to make the trade happen) and bought a Honda Helix with the step through frame. He didn't like getting his feet down around the running boards, so he had Dad order him a voyager trike/training wheel kit out of the ads in cycleworld.  Dad triked the bike, and Paw Paw went to town.

He'd ride to town and back, but never went out on the road for a trip, but he satisfied his goal in life to ride a motorcycle.

He's passed on. Mom still has his Helix, and occasionally she'll take it for a spin around the yard but hasn't been on the road yet (to my knowledge).  I must admit that Helix is a comfy fun ride with excellent gas mileage!

Whatever it takes to keep riding as long as you're able sounds good to me too!
