I recently had to tear down the carbs on our 2000 Tourer. The low speed jets were clogged on two of the carbs. I took the opportunity to replace all the low speed and main jets. This is the first time I've had to do some real serious wrenching on the bikes.

On the left bank I found after pulling the vacuum sliders there was about half an ounce of oil in the throat of the carb that was causing the slider to stick. (see the pic) Does anybody have a clue how that oil got there?

I would have expected to find oil in the air box if oil was coming up through the crank case breather. Not the case. There was a really small film of oil in the air box from the K&N filter.  But K&N filter oil is red and the oil in the carbs looked like engine oil, clean and fresh.

So... Anybody got a clue as to where this oil may have come form?

Thanks!

The drool tube is almost empty, maybe 1/2 an inch of goo in it. But even if it  was full right up to the into the air box it would still have a good 2.5 to 3 inches to go up to the top of the intake tubes inside the air box.

I'm beginning to think that the oil came from mother Honda... Somehow got in there on the assembly line. It runs better now than it ever has since I unstuck the sliders.

some folks feel they have to "paint" the k&n with oil till it turns red. add the velocity the air is flowing under power and you can probably figure thats where its coming from.

Could be... but does the K&N oil turn a golden color with age? If so that could be where it came from. It sure looked like motor oil to me (I shoulda taken a picture)

Oil is distilled from petroleum just like gasoline.

I would say that probably is residue from gasoline.

I'm thinking it is from gas.

When I used to use K&N I made my own filter oil. I believe it was motor oil and diesel fuel mixture and if you wanted you could use red food coloring, I never did. Also cleaned them with gas. MAYBE your mystery oil as its hard to tell how much you sprayed on without the red food coloring Undecided
To much work with K&N I use the stock paper filter now.
