there is a wanted posting in the listings for overdrive gears did any company ever mass produce sets of these or are they one offs someone made

There were some made years ago. Mario gears. Didn't seem to go over very well.  The Valk didn't seem to have the power to use them.

  Go to Bigbf.com and you will see that Bill installed and tested them.
 It will give you some good info.

I would think that going to a slightly taller rear tire (if available?) would be better than the gears.

yes, will use taller tires when installing trike kit.

I run a 205/65/16 on the rear of Ole Blue.  It lowered the rpms a little out on the highway.
