In addition to my Valkyrie I have a Triumph America. I'm trying to get the muffler off of my America so that I can replace the insulation (it's starting to sound like a Harley). I have Bub slip ons and they've been on for about 18 months. One muffler came off fairly easily, but the other is really being stubborn. I've taken off the front clamp and unbolted the rear bracket, so there is nothing holding the muffler onto the header, it's just slipped onto the header pipe.
So far I've tried to twist the muffler to get it loose and that hasn't worked, and I've beat on the rear bracket with a hard rubber mallet and that hasn't worked. Does anyone have a trick for separating slip ons from header pipes ?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Soak the joint with penetrating oil , or WD40, for a day or so. Make sure the clamps haven't crimped the two pices together. FWIW ???

Start her up get it hot - cool the header pipe with hose water just before the joint. This has worked for me in the past with bike pipes/muffle's that had not been off for 20yrs.

Skinheads idea sounded like a good idea to me, but didn't quite work. I hooked a chain onto the muffler then hooked it onto the front bumper of my neighbors new Mercedes. He's always telling me what a solid car his Mercedes is, so I figured what the heck. I revved up the Valk and following Skinheads advice I dumped the clutch. When my neighbor came home and started hollering I was kinda careful how I told him that Skinhead was behind the bumper lying in the middle of the street. I didn't say that Skinhead did it, I just implied it. Now my neighbor wants to know his address and who he's insured with.  Actually I soaked it with as much liquid wrench as I could last night as I tapped it with a mallet. Then this morning I repeated the process and it started rotating, and once I could start rotating it I started to slowly pull it off. So it's off and tomorrow i'll wrap it and put it back on and it will cease sounding like a Harley. Thanks everyone for your suggestions. |
