My riding buddy's GoldWing has thrown up a bit of an anomoly.
I've posted the following on varoious GoldWing forums, and so far I do not have a definate answer.
Maybe someone on here would have the answer???
Our '89 GL1500 GoldWing's exhaust has been slowly dying for years. 7 years ago we swopped the OEM mufflers for Motad stainless.
Now, however, the collector box has bitten the dust. After much deliberation we decided to remove the old stuff and replace the collector and headers with Motad stainless to match the mufflers.
After a bit of a fight, we got the old system removed; and the new set is ready to be fitted.
But we've hit a snag.
There are heat shields (heat chambers, as Honda calls them) that fit to the inner sides of the headers, and they are not healthy. Part of these shileds are actual anchor points that help hold the outer painted lower covers onto the bike.
See the pics below.
They show the rotted inner shields attached to the new stainless headers. Note at the front of the shields the anchor points for the outer painted shields, and on one there is a spigot for a heat hose attachment.

I've checked various sites for replacement inner shields, and have come up with the following.
Microfiches I have checked show the following numbers for our '89 GL1500 :-
18327-MN5-000, and 18427-MN5-000. Availability checks show that these parts are discontinued.
However, on later years of the GL1500 the part numbers are :-
18327-MT8-000, and 18427-MT8-000. Availability checks show that these parts can be obtained.
The question is, are these parts the same but just with different part numbers, and will the MT8's work on our '89?
These parts are not cheap, so I'll need a definate YES or NO on this please.
Thanks.
