Hi Guys,
I put a new air filter on the Valk today and am having a devil of a time getting the top cover back on. The metal clutch line that runs down the left side of the airbox is squeezed in really tight between the frame and the airbox. It has a rubber abrasion sleeve on it too.
the problem I have is I can't seem to get the airbox lid on as the rubber abrasion sleeve on the clutch line is in the way. No amount of squeezing and easing is getting the lid down flush where I can do up the screws.
Any tips?

did you replace it with a stock OEM filter or a K&N filter if its a k&n you don't use the rubber gasket anymore store it with your extra parts if its a OEM replacement filter then something isn't lineing up correctly and this comment will bring others to chime in some use the K&N red prefilter some don't its optional.....

Check to make sure you only have one rubber gasket installed.... I put on a K&N and found that there were two in there for some reason. It does take a wiggle or two at times to get that seated on there. Once you get it aligned, the screws will put it into place quite nicely.

Thanks all,
I got it sorted last night. Was able to move the clutch line a little bit, just enough to get the top cover down snug.
Cheers,
Mark

Wow! That's all I can say after putting a new air filter in the bike. I made no changes other than taking out a dirty stock filter and putting in a new stock filter. The bike feels incredible! Better idle, smoother running and way more torque and power. Roll on acceleration is transformed. Who knows what was wrong, but whatever it was I fixed it! I am one happy camper!

Oh yeah - one more question,
The top cover has black foam in its intake ports wjich face the rear of the bike. This is getting crumbly with age and breaking down. Does it need to be replaced?
Thanks,
Mark

On the Ero (and I guess yours) there is that foam for some reason. The US models dont have that. I dont know what its for, but Im sure any air filter foam (like the K&N pre filter foam) or any other foam filter product you can get locally should suffice

That is an engineered foam designed to restrict the flow of air.
When the foam is removed, as some have done in the past & reported on this forum, the results have been a very poor running motor.
In this particular (weird engineering) feature Honda has also made adjustments to the size of the jets to accommodate the air restriction.
I know I don't have the whole story and can't imagine why this has been done, but probably some environmental dictates from the government.
A search would reveal more I am sure because a lot of the posts I remember were very old (long time ago).
And it seems to me the main jets were in the 60's to 80's range on those particular Valkyries.

Thanks Ricky,
The bike is running great now so I won't bother messing with things unless I notice a drop in performance. Taking the tank off is quite a pain compared to my other bikes.
Cheers,
Mark

Hi 8Track,
I have a '99 export version. Affirm, the foam pad on the airfilter box cover intake has to do with emission control. The export versions have smaller jets (86). Mine was crumbled as well some time ago and getting powderlike. I took it out and the bike ran like it was missing two cilinders. The foam does not come separately, you have to buy a new cover. If you ever encounter acceleration problems above 3500 RPM, increased fuel consumption and possibly black smoke from the exhaust, sure thing. It's your airbox cover intake foam. We have had many bikes suffering from this issue. The foam starts to deteriorate after 10 years. To my knowledge, this is not an issue for the US Valkyrie, since they have the bigger jets.

Thanks Beer,
That is very useful information. Has anyone had a go at replacing the foam?
