I've been having another bout with my right hip(been on/off for last 20+yrs.) so finally gave in and went to my family dr.  He had a copy of my MRI from 3 yrs. ago and after looking at the write up said it's no wonder I'm in pain. Seems back then I had a slight tear in the cartilage surrounding the hip ball/socket joint. Add to that some arthritis and he laughed at me when I fussed about it. His words; "geez man, you're 75+ and more active than most of my patients 10+ yrs. younger, what do you expect at that tender young age." At the very least he thinks I'll have some arthroscopy but will wait to see what the hip specialist says next Monday. Sure hope it doesn't involve full replacement, don't know what I'd do with the left over  parts. Do they let you take them home with you?  Grin And to add insult to injury, last Saturday I was in the shop chatting w/Jim Malone and sitting on one of my scooter stools. I went to roll over to my bike to point out something and the wheels caught in a rut in the garage floor. The stool tipped forward slightly and I slide right off and on my butt from about 20" high, jamming the left wrist on the floor. Kinda put the final touches on the hip problem. So, with the "happy" pills I was given today there won't be any bicycle or Valkyrie riding for a while. Now that we have great riding weather, this sorta sucks.

Hope the arthroscopic works John.  You might have to slow down for a couple of days. Smiley

Larue, I just clidked on the photostash link at the bottom of your post profile. That's a neat picture of your bike in front of our house. That was taken last Dec. at the big gathering, some of the neighbors still talk about it. They wonder when I'm going to have another gathering, told them probably never since a lot of folk don't like to come into town. We'll have to see if anyone is interested in doing it again....maybe next month. Last year was on the 15th if I recall.

John, let's hope it is the easy fix.

I no like those hip/knee replacement ideas.

I had my knee replaced and it no hurt no more, but at times it is worthless as hell.

Yes, everyday I do those firkin exercises as told.

That is one reason I had to trade off my Hemi Ram.

Fell out of it 3 times when the knee collapsed on me.
One time I went under the Ram & my wifes car in the garage.   Had to call 911 to get me out, now that was embarrassing.

The 911 call, 1 leg was in the Ram trapped under the brake pedal, other leg under mom's Toyota, and basically otherwise hanging with my head almost touching the pavement.    Also was a very small working space.

Russ, I'm also hoping for a quick and easy "whatever." I'll know more (I hope) after my Monday appt., but it needs to be taken care of soon. It's affecting how I walk and is messing up my back and my entire left side, I guess because it's taking extra duty from the limping/gimping. Bending over to get something off the floor is almost out of the question, excruciating in the hip when I do. You should see me put on socks and shoes, my wife has to stifle a snicker. Grab the right knee and lift the leg high enough to grap my ankle with the other hand. Then with both hands I lift my foot up so I can cross my leg so I can put on the sock and shoe. And visiting the "reading room" is a real chore. Sitting down...no problem, getting back up....problem. As you well know, getting older isn't for sissies, just ask TJ!   Grin

If I were you, I'd just stop messing around n' have the hip replacement. Life is short n' pain sucks...  Had mine done 5 years ago at age 58 due to bad arthritis n' the fact that I laid carpet for several years in my 20's, Knee kicker caused damage. Had it done at Bay Pines in St Pete. I was up walking the day of the operation n' back on a motorcycle in 4 weeks. They told me to wait longer but I was pain free n' said screw it...  Before the op, I was having trouble getting a good nights sleep, pain kept waking me up. Now life is good n' other then the scar,, I can't tell the hip isn't my own.  Feels normal.  My 2 cents.  In any event, hope you can get mobile AND,,,, pain free.....

Jim, for a while now the only way I get a good night's rest is if I take something for pain and half a Tylenol PM. I only take half the pain pill, it takes the edge off and still lets me function normally until it's lights out. I still can't sleep on my sides for very long, hip pain wakes me up. If I fall asleep on my back then both hips start to bother me....plus a nudge from my resident bed warmer which means I'm not singing her song.  Wink  Three years ago the dr. said I wasn't a replacement candidate, but did say some issues may crop up before long forcing at least some type of procedure. I'm hoping I don't need another MRI....I don't do well in cramped spaces.

John, it's time to bite the bullet and get a raised toilet seat, with handles.  If you have the hip replacement you'll have to have that any way.
There are a bunch of tools to help get dressed.  (A stick with a hook)  Pickup tools and an aid for putting socks on.
I can say I've been there, done that.

Sounds like,,, you,,, are,,,,,,,,,,,,,, READY....

The VA told me that when my pain level was interfering with my sleep,,, it was time to have the op.... n' I did.

I wouldn't think the VA was  ''operation happy''..   I mean, I would think them using the pain level as to when to do it, would be universal in the ortho field...

They did give me some good pain pills post op.  Only took em for 12 days n' set them down.  Have you told em this is cutting into your sleep?  If so,,, What did they say about that?

Did they elaborate, on why??   ''you were not a candidate'' ????

Tonight I'm going to take a bit more of the pain pill. It wore off during the night and this morning was unbelieveable. The swelling of the bursa has the sciatic fired up to really put the icing on the cake. Should have seen me try to put on my socks and shoes. But the most pain is from the torn cartilage, the dr. surmised it must have caught in the joint somehow to cause what I'm feeling. It's like a hot iron laying down on the groin.

Hope your up and riding soon again.  You know the old saying, "No pain no gain!"  or was that "This is a pain in the a**.  Either way hope you have a speedy recovery and best wishes.  Ron
