I've got a bad rear wheel bearing on my '98 standard. I saw the post below that had a link to Jeff K's site. Will the bearing 5204 work on both sides? I called the local "stealer" and they want $20.00 for the left side and $55.00  Shocked for the right, so I assume they're different. Jeff K's site says the 5204's are about $11.00 each. I didn't understand if the 5204's will work on both sides or not. I went to the local Auto Zone and Advanced Auto and neither place could find them in a book, let alone have them in stock. If someone can tell me what the numbers are for both bearings and the best place to find them, I would greatly appreciate it.

I looked at Direct Line's site and they have a front AND rear set listed for $37.81. Should I just do that instead?

This is from Jeff K's site.    The top paragraph is left side, next one down is right side.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
 Left side........................

And all models LEFT 6204-2RS or  6204LL

(same bearing different mfg.) 6204 is size, letters indicate sealed both sides. See below about seal designation

 Ride side.......................

1997-2000 All RIGHT rear  5204?? Double Row Angular Contact Bearing

They need to be sealed both sides.

MRC #5204ZZ

RSR #5204EE

IKS #52042RS

The list goes on, and on. Just get a 5204 that is sealed on both sides. Mfg's use different suffixes to designate seal configuration. The list would be as long as my arm. And if you ask for a 5204 2RS and the child behind the counter knows nothing about bearings, he may tell you they don't have it. But they do have 5204ZZ's. But that isn't what you asked for.

If you have a "bearing house" nearby go there and ask for a 5204 with seals on both sides, then keep a spare at home. They only cost about $11

Embarrassed oops! I mis-read that. I thought the top paragraph was for the front wheel. Thanks RJ. I'm gonna try N.A.P.A. on Monday morning to see if they have them or can order them. Unless someone knows of a better place.

Thank you too Dag!

If you got a bearing house in your town try them with just the generic numbers.  They will (should) be relatively inexpensive.

If you dont have a local bearing house...I just got a complete set from these folks. Just search by the generic number from the earlier posts. The larger one (5204) is called a kit on their site but its just the bearing. Good prices. Quick shipping. Bearings for my 97.

http://www.vxb.com/

6004-2RS-1  2  $3.95
6204-2RS-1  1  $4.95
Kit6936        1  $14.95

Definitely try a bearing house before paying the higher prices at the auto parts stores.  I just bought a new seal for the rear at NAPA about a month ago and paid about 4 times what a bearing house charged me for my previous one  (which I donated to a brother at InZane in 2006 who had lost his rear bearings and seal).

Okay, the front side and one rear side are 6204 bearings.  You can get these bearings from ebay at about $2.00 each.

The other side rear bearing is a 5204.  This bearing runs about $15.00 on ebay.

I have absolutely no idea if the ebay bearings are the same quality as the bearings at HDL.

I can give you some links to ebay sites if you cannot find these (although an ebay search for "6204" or #5204" should get the job done).  You can email me at vanagon40 at gmail .dot. com

When I replaced mine, I went to a bearing wearhouse down in Homestead, PA.  If I remember right, the pair of rear bearings cost me about $60...the left was only about $10-$15, but the right one was between $45-$50.  The right one wasn't bad, so I didn't replace that one...I saved the bearing for a "just-in-case" time.

I recently got a set from All Balls:
http://www.goallballs.com/Product_lookup_results_shop.asp
Rear bearing set is about $29 including dust seal. I got mine in just a few days. I went ahead and ordered an extra set for the back, as well as a set for the front.

By the way, Carolina Bike and Trike sells 5 packs of the 3 rear O rings for about $13.

Did some searching, and thebigbearingstore.com has the following:

5204-RS $9.15 ea.

6004-RS $2.09 ea.

6204-RS $2.70 ea.

About $10 shipping for a set of each.

OOps check that, was $8-ish for shipping. I ordered TWO complete sets, front and back, for less than $41.00!!!

Update- I went around to some auto parts stores in town on Sunday and they both had no bearings in stock and when they looked them up in their books, both said they could order the 6204 but couldn't even find a 5204. This morning I went to NAPA and they had 1 6204 in stock and couldn't find a 5204 in their book either. I bought the 6204 for $17.00 because it's really the only one I needed. I asked them if they knew of a "bearing house" anywhere nearby, and they told me about one in Altoona, Pa. which is only about 30 miles away. I went there and they said they had the 6204 but no 5204's. tickedoff BUT, they said they could order them and have them in by tomorrow morning! cooldude I told them I wanted 1 6204 and 2 5204's and he said the grand total would be....... $41.81 plus tax!  Cool That's just a tad better than the $170.00 that the stealer wanted.

Thank you to everyone for all the help. You guys and this board are invaluable sources of information!

I have used the vxb bearings in several bikes and four wheelers with very good results. HDL also sells a kit for all bearings and seals for a good price. Glad you got what you needed. I always carry a set of 6204s in the saddlebag just in case. So far never removed them from the box. cooldude
