i did a oil change with filter on a 97 standard today. I put in 4qts as i do in my 01 standard. it will show a hair above the upper line but thats ok with me. On my friends 97 it was way above the line. Does the 97 take less oil than the other years? If so i will drain some out. According to the honda book 3.9qts. 97-2002. Any thoughts? Also when i drained the old oil into the 1gal jug the new oil came in it was right on the money with the amount i put in.

nope, all years take 3.9 with filter.

bike should be standing straight up when you check,

did you start the engine before you checked it?

if not the filter was still empty.

My '97 Tour calls for 3.9 qts. I empty a one gallon jug of Rotella T, and it puts it just above the line.

Yes RJ I did the oil change and then ran the bike for 1-2 min. Then shut her down to bleed the brakes. Took her out for a ride and let her sit for 30 min and then before i left i checked it in the upright position. That is when noticed it was above the upper line.

and make sure you don't screw the dip stick in when checking oil level.

If you have an after market chrome dipstick, the lines may be off.  Mine were until I cross checked them with the stock dipstick, and adjusted as needed.

This also depends on if you use a filter that is larger and holds more oil now the filter does not hold that oil but the longer the filter the more residue it holds.

The filter that I bought at Honda-dealer this year was much shorter then compared to stock - so, there will go less oil in that filter. That will explain why now there is too much in, because the filter cannot contain the same amount of oil then the former bigger oilfilters...
