I have a '97 Tourer. When the outside temp. gets below 40 degrees it just will not start. It turns over normally but won't fire. If it's warmer it starts good. If you use the choke anytime, you can forget it. It won't start. Any help will be great. Thanks.

Have you got the choke completly on?    The last little bit (1/2") is very stiff.  The black choke knob should be pointed straight across from the right handlebar.

Give that a try and if no start, check your battery.

The battery needs full amount of charge to make the old girl fire.

Any parts store can check the battery for you, usually free of charge.

What part of the world are you located in papabear?   If ya add it to your profile we don't have to ask.   If you are close to me bring it by the shop  and we can check it for ya.

40 degrees is the magic temperature for needing the choke.  RJ is correct about the choke lever.  You need to really push hard on it for the last 1/2".  It will really feel like you are going to break it, but that is what that lever requires.  It will start right up.  Let it idle for about a minute and then let off on the choke gradually.

Mine used to do the same thing, even with choke(which is really an enrichment circuit)fully on, and with a fully charged new battery.  Make sure the enrichment mechanism is properly adjusted so that it will come fully on at the carbs when the lever is fully depressed.  I would try running a strong mix of seafoam in the tank.  When you get it started, run it with the lever fully on for a while.  Mine had partially blocked enrichment passages and this worked to clean up mine. 15 degree starts are not a problem now.

My Valkyrie had been sitting in an unheated garage for about a week and a half. Teens and high 20s for that time. When I went out earlier today for my ride it was 43 when I left and my garage was 31 temp wise. Choke ALL the way down turn on key pull in clutch NO THROTTLE hit starter button turned over 2 or 3 times and she woke right up!!  cooldude IF you have a good battery-good or treated fuel in the tank-the choke is on ALL the way-your plugs are decent-your air filter is NOT a birds nest-DO NOT touch the throttle-key on hit starter should do zackly what mine does. Yes-a lot of sub systems have to be up to the task. Mine has started right up in the low 20s. You are tempted to use the throttle-you can believe me or not as I learned the hard way-NO touchy the throttle on cold start up. I do my light check brake lights turn indicators 4-ways high and low beams horn check while it's still on full choke. I pull up to the top of my drive way with the choke about half way engaged. Leave it running while I close the garage door-with a remote-put on jacket balaclava sunglasses helmet gloves throw a leg over and COMPLETELY shut OFF the choke. I go easy til I hit the main highway-bout 4 miles-then when I get on the 4 lane-I rides er like I stole er.  cooldude IF you are NOT sure of the age of the battery-get it checked and replace if needed.  New lead acid Yuasa batteries in our size can still be found for about $80.00 ish. RIDE SAFE.

Kinda sounds like the symptoms I was experiencing when my Dyna 3000 icm went bad.  If the battery checks out and the choke is working, think maybe it could be that?

With mine, it was working ok all summer, and then in late September, it would turn over just fine, but would not fire. Went down the list of variables that were easy to eliminate, and the Dyna was pretty close to the top. Swapped the stock one back in, and she started right up.
