I am considering installing #38 slow jets in my bike.  Is there a GOOD reason to do this?
I have the carbs apart on the kitchen table right now and am about to dip them in carb cleaner.
I noticed 2 slow jets clogged and one cracked. Yes CRACKED. The screw slot is cracked.
This bike has never been apart so I am guessing this happened at the factory. Anyway I
decided rather than clean the slow jets I would just replace them, especially since one of them
is damaged anyway, I am fine with stock #35 jets. The bike ran fine till the slow jets started
giving me hell. (Don't leave fuel in the carbs over the winter months.)

The mileage has never been great, somewhere between 25 - 35 mpg. Very seldom 35.
Usually when going down hill.  Smiley  But I am satisfied with the way the bike runs.  Very smooth
and strong. Just the mileage sucks.

WIll the 38 jets help that any? Will I have to change to new needles? I have a set of adjustable
needles, the ones with the clips. They came with the bike along with some really loud pipes that
I removed. I reinstalled the factory pipes and the factory needles when I purchased the bike.

I also have been unable to remove the pilots they are frozen in place. I bought one of those
pilot sockets with the little D and it just rounded the heads of the pilots off. I am going to have
to drill them and use an easy out to remove them. This part really sucks. Cry Does someone make
a set of pilots with regular screw slots??

If I replace the slow jets with #38's I suppose I am going to have to adjust the pilots also right?
Arrrgh!    Shocked

Thanks in advance for the info.

Oh BTW, who sells the stock stuff?? Certainly not my dealer, that is unless I want to wait 4 - 6
weeks for delivery.

Thanks

Why install 38s when the 35s work well?? Just remember to Sea-foam the fuel before storage.. As for the pilots, I wouldn't try to drill and  easy-out them.. A Dremel can be used to slot them and use a regular screwdriver..It'll cut into the housing,,but,, it shouldn't hurt anything..

The only reason I've ever heard for installing 38s is to reduce the chance of clogging. Yes you will have to adjust your pilots to 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 out. It has worked for me, previously the ethanol was killing me. My bikes would clog up if not ridden in a few days.
It won't help your gas mileage.
Sudco has 38s or 35s.

If you have the carbs on a bench, flip them over and spray the pilots with a good penetrating oil like PB Blaster or Kroil and then give it plenty of time to work. That should do it. Go ahead an cut a groove in the heads so you can adjust them with a flat head screwdriver.

Bit late with the reply, but since I put the 38's in mine I have found it very much quicker on the response and not having to leave the choke on too long. For me it was a positive change.

Go for the 38s you wont regret it smoother more power and just feels better, replacing for clogging is the least reason to replace it.

Hi Mike. You can tell who's not riding so much, they are "bored" and on the "board" more! Me, I've been tinkering abit and doing test runs mostly. Just put in new timing belts and a 4 degree TW. Seems to perform good. My friend has a tourer and he can beat me off the line and out accelerate, my goal is to do the same to him. Between tweaking my IS and me loosing weight we'll see what happens. The TW install and belt change out was a piece of cake. Was going to take the carbs out but decided to wait on that as I didn't want to fight with that "#$^%$&#%#^@%@" airbox again! Did the string thing and finally decided to lube the tubes abit so they go on the carbs right. My airbox jams up against the main wiring harness in front so didn't want to seat properly. May have to try repositioning the harness somehow. I do actually want to do some riding too this summer. Hope your healing up.
