On a trip this summer I had a problem with one of the fork seals leaking on the Valk. VRCC member hubcapsc suggested  that I try using 35mm camera film to clean the trash out of the seal. It worked great. The leak was completely stopped and is still good after 3000 plus miles.

However, I don't know how much oil is left in the fork because I went about 1000 miles before I got the leak stopped. Is there any way to check the oil  level or add fork oil without a complete disassembly? If I have to remove the forks, should I replace the seals and bushings or just change the oil? The bike has about 48,000 miles.

             Thanks,

                        Bill

If you remove the forks, you may as well change the bushings and seals with your mileage. Accurately checking fork oil level is near impossible. If it rides OK and doesn't leak, just keep riding it.

There is nearly a quart of oil in each fork. Unless you were completely covered in it...from front to back...and dripping...it's probably got plenty.

One of my bikes has been leaking a little, on and off, for four years.  Done the 35mm film and the Sealmate with partial success.  The front suspension is as good as ever and compares nicely to my other valk with no leak at all.  I wouldn't worry.

However, I do have all the rebuild parts ready and waiting for the day they must be rebuilt.
