Thought that i would share this everyone as an FYI. I had significant play, vertically and horizontally, in my clutch lever and was consistently getting progressively worse as far as activation of the clutch. After taking apart the lever, i noticed the problem! The push rod had blasted a hole through the back of the lever and the bushing was badly worn. Pretty inexpensive fix and feels new again.

Can anyone shed some light on what would have caused this? I posted recently re this issue and purchased the parts necessary to rebuild the master cylinder. Since discovering these worn out parts, i am holding off with the rebuild.

This is a common maintenance item. All metric bikes with hydraulic clutches use that same pushrod bushing. Suzuki's price is the best at about $4. I keep one in the parts bin all the time. Be sure to reassemble with a good waterproof grease.

From JeffK's generic parts page in Shop Talk (Link at the top of the page here).
Clutch lever bushing

The Honda part Number 2285-MBO-006 is $10

The Suzuki part number 59892-08A00 is $3 and exactly the same part.

I have a couple in the parts bin also...

If your lever had that much play in it, you should replace the lever as well, not just the bushing.  The excess play in the pivot hole (the one that the bolt goes through) will cause the switch to not work as it should, the result being that if the bike is in gear, you won't be able to start it even though the clutch lever is pulled in.

Lube everything with your favourite goopy grease.
