Frame and motor # ID

Is there a place where you can find  numbers to tell if they are what came in a bike????
I thought motor and frame # were the same...   Any help would be great....

there is a engine number on the right side of the motor and the VIN number on the neck tag and its stamped into the neck behind the headlight but they don't match in any way the title just has the neck number on it not like old Harleys and bikes that had matching numbers those days are long gone

From the service manual;

VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER
The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is attached on the
left side of the frame near the steering head.

ENGINE SERtAL NUMBER
The engine serial number is stamped on the rear side of the
right crankcase.

FRAME SERIAL NUMBER
The f r a me  serial number is stamped on the right side of the
steering head.

CARBURETOR IDENTIFICATION NUMBER
The carburetor identification number is stamped on the
intake side of the carburetor body.

COLOR LABEL
The color label is attached to the frame down tube under
the left side cover.

I know where all the numbers are... What I need to know is if this motor came in this bike...

Damn good question TJ, but no they do not match and haven't matched since late 80's and early 90's.

I got in a short sheet deal with my 44 Harley ServiCar with the DOT.

I had bought an extra motor for this old girl after the original turned out to be junk.

Went to County DOT to title and license it.   They wanted to see the unit.  Trailered it down and found out I didn't have a engine # in the block.   They told me it was susposed to match the frame.   Said OK, went home, got out my fancy # punches and proceeded to stamp the frame # in the engine.

Took it back to DOT about a month later.   Drew a different inspector, he passed it with flying colors.

Immediately put the title in storage.
Just took it out in early November.
Had been in storage for 22 years.
Have plates on it valid through 2014 Sept.
Engine is mounted and it has hit on 2 cylinders, so I know it will run.

DUH............

Trust me, that would never of happened in California.
They would have impounded the Trike and gave me a ton of papers to fill out and return with them all filled out & $375 for a months impound storage fee.

Currently waiting on a different pair of tranny gear and rear end gear, with matching link chain.   It is the modified version that was out in the late 40's for Police scoot's, for some reason this one had never been modified.

Now instead of a solid 60 MPH, it will do 80 MPH at the same RPM, I'm told.
All I knew was it was available, just had to find it.

Honda frame/engine numbers didn't match even in the early 60's. They would pull a finished engine or frame off the production line and for inspection, testing, and tear down. The engine/fame numbers were close to one another though because they didn't pull that many.

Edit: My engine/frame numbers from my 1964 Honda 305 Dream end in 746 and 752. Clearly related but not identical. My Interstate numbers end in 1716 and 1878.
