Newbie doesn't own an Operator's Manual so I gotta ask.  I don't find any mention of changing the tranny lube, sooooo what's up with the tranny lubrication.  (Please no laughing at the newbie!)   Roll Eyes

The transmission is lubricated with the engine oil in the crank case.   Some find that changing brands or from dino to synthetic quiets down the gear whine.

Thanks YoungPup.  Seems pretty noisey shifting but I "guess" that's normal.  Even my Beemer shifts/bangs going into the various gears.

They definitely have a whine to them.  That comes from the straight cut gears.

I not heard any "whine" from the tranny just the noisy "clunk" when shifting.

The Clunk with shifting is normal for a Newbie, It makes this noise due to the Straight-Cut Gears as Youngpup Described, along with a Slight Wining in 5th Gear around 45 mph. As you become more Farmiliar with your Machine, (Valkyrie), you will find that you will learn when to shift so that you can decrease this Hard-Shifting Noise.

Ditto what they said Ron.  Make SURE that when you change oil it does not have the friction modifiers in it.  Usually on the back of the bottle there will be a circle with information.  If it says energy conserving do not use it.  Without getting into an oil type discussion too deep.  I now use either Valvoline made for motorcycles which is a little less expensive or Mobil 1 motorcycle oil.  You don't normally change the oil in the bike as often as your car, so give it the good stuff.

It took me awhile to get used to certain noises too Ron. I got the opportunity to ride a friends Valk and he rode mine. The noises were the same on his bike and he said my bike sounded normal to him as well. As far as oils decreasing some of the whining, I could tell no difference. My bike came with a good motorcycle oil and when I changed to a full synthetic, I use Amsoil  motorcycle oil, it sounded exactly the same, to me anyway.

When I bought the Valk I asked what oil he was using so I could continue using the same.  He gave me the empty jug and it was Amzoil 20w-50.  I guess it's probably a good synthetic.

Definitely check out the shoptalk page. Also check out Chet's FAQ page at the top of shoptalk. Lots of good info there.
