going way back a few years ago my buddy John Schmidt helped me get my girl on her feet we changed out the OEM slow jets for the bigger ones (.035 ?)
in the following time period much has happened but since I've had her running for the last year she hasn't given me trouble starting, until recently. listening to guys much more wrench worthy than me plus perusing this board have informed me my pilot screws need to be set at 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 turns out not the OEM 2 turns.

2 weekends ago I turned them back to 1.5 turns and all was well for a day or two, I got home and needed to run to the store and she fired right back up. she failed to start at the store crazy2

I took the truck and last wednesday and after work  I got back down there and backed the pilot screws out to 1.75 turns.

all was hunky dory until this morning more then a week later I stopped for gas this morning she failed to start, and I was actually running the battery down.

both times I got her fired up by bump starting on a down slope, which also seems odd. it will start that way but not by the starter?

the first thing i'm going to do is bribe my neighbor to resync the carbs. what else should I be looking at?
I'm assuming this is all related to the idle setting, I hate to ass/u/me Roll Eyes

Have the battery tested. How old is the battery?
They can spin the engine fast but not be able to fire the ignition.

makes sense, actually makes perfect sense, if I wasn't such a shade tree mechanic I'd be able to reason it out myself. uglystupid2

A good battery should be just over half that price.

When you bump started the bike you weren't using any volts to turn the starter.

Tom, I've been buying my batteries at Batteries Plus the last few years. Never had a problem with them and they don't cost $130. Think I paid around $75-80 last time. They say they are fully charged after adding the juice, but I still put them on the trickle overnight. And just so you'll know, we put in #38's and I set the pilots slightly under two out. Don't recall if it was 1.75 or  Undecided, that was more than 24 hrs. ago.  Grin  You may not remember, but we did check the sync also with my handy dandy homemade all inclusive supercharged high performance carb sync-checkerupper. That means it's nothing more than a single gauge with a six tube manifold, controlled by a set of six on/off doodads(technical term), one for each feeder tube. Lets me lay the gauge on the seat, hook up all six carbs at once, and just turn on/off each one as you need to. cooldude

John has been around here a long time and knows what he is doing. I doubt the problem is anything he did or fuel related.

Not starting with the 'self-commencer' and/while bump starting just fine is a classic low/bad battery symptom. If replacing the battery, fully slow charge it before usage.

Adjusting/syncing the carburetors is something that doesn't have to performed very often and I give John a big  cooldude cooldude cooldude  for using a single vacuum gauge.

Yeah, that John guy is a cool dude, helped a lot of members here, including me.
I got to say that I like the sense of humor that seems to show up on his posts "that was more than 24 hrs. ago" Grin cooldude

Hey John

How about a pic of your "handy dandy homemade all inclusive supercharged high performance carb sync-checkerupper" for those of us looking into going the same route

he has the coolest choke setup going no cable anymore but a small lever on the  the back end of the left carb bank to engage the choke  no slack and you know exactally how far the choke is applied  really slick setup

I also had advice from a member who prefers to remain nameless but knows his way around a valk engine backwards to adjust my pilot jets to just 1 yes 1 turn out after switching my jets up 1 size to 38s and seems to be running just fine all the time
