If it aint broke, don't fix it!

This has happened four times now & I don't know what is the problem.  Out of gas? w/ 1/2 tank left.  First time in Aspen, 4 July, 85* stop & go traffic,  filled up took 4.3 gal.  Next time 3/4 way up Monarch pass, 65* same thing, go on reserve, runs great.  Third time between Alamosa & Fort Garland.  Go on reserve, runs fine, 4.3 gal at fill up.  Fourth time nearly home, 1/2 tank on guage, go on reserve......  Vent line is connected, not kinked, stock ECM as far as I know, so what do you think?  Time for a petcock rebuild/replacement, or cleaning or what?  Thanks in advance for your help.  Stan

mine acted like that and the only thing that fixed if was a pingel.  A new OEM would have fixed too but I dont like them very much.  Go pingel.

A kinked tank vent hose, or a clogged petcock gas filter, maybe? Of course, beside a defective petcock.

I also use a Pingle, i think, it´s always a good idea, to eliminate parts, which are known for problems...

Is the subject filter internal to the tank?  Don't really know how the petcock/filter looks/works.  Stan

sounds like the petcock vacuum diaphragm is leaking. search for my posts on the subject. put a new diaphragm in and install a snubber in the vacuum line. It most likely will never wear out again.
Mine was worn out at 15k miles

Fuel filter is part of the petcock assembly and is in the tank.

The problem could also be a leak in the vacume line to the petcock. I would still rebuild the petcock. Even a low mileage petcock can fail due to age I guess. I had a bad one on a new to me 98 with less than 10,000 miles. +1 on the snubber reccomendation. I installed one on 2 bikes after I read  CA ExhaustCoatings suggestion. It's cheap and easy and makes a lot of sense.
