Has anyone used anything besides the polk 501? Had the polks in the front and something went wrong on my way to robbinsville NC this past october and fried my amp and one of the speakers. Been thinking about going with  6 1/2"  speakers in the front and the 501s in the trunk. Polk has some called the mm651um that have great reviews and was wondering if I could make them fit in the speaker pods with some modification. The cutout size is 5 1/16" and the 501 cutout is 3 11/16". Im sure I could get 1 1/8" more out of the pods. Just wondering if anyone has done this or am I going to be the guinea pig.

Once you start cutting plastic, you can't put it back. I'd replace the DB 501s. I used 4 of them in my Wing. Love them.

I have the DXi 500 in front which is basically the same as the DB 501 and the DXi 400 in the rear because it is a direct fit. I don't see any difference in the DXi and the DB's but the DXi was on sale for 50% off when I bought them.

If someone is willing to donate an inner speaker panel I would be happy to figure out how to install a 6"x9" or at least a 5"x7" even if it takes designing mounting hardware.  cooldude cooldude

I would do it but the replacement price for the inner speaker panel is just to high to experiment with on my current budget. Cry

I am looking for the speakers to replace the fronts..

The Polk db501's are tried and true but since "external" audio is not a big deal for me I was thinking of trying to shoe horn these:

http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/LANZAR-VX50S-/60-10232

They are a little bit bigger diameter but thin in depth.

Looking at this thread it "appears the 5.25" speaker would fit...

Comments?

Thanks in advance,

Troy

I looked at the page for the Lanzar speakers and it doesn't say anything about them being waterproof. One of the main reasons folks use the Polks is that they are MARINE rated speakers that are good for use in external, rain/water exposed environments.

Fred.

I bought the Polks for installation ease since others blazed the path before me.

However the Polks are no more marine rated than most good automotive speakers.

The Lanzars are built with the same cone, surround and frame material..

The Polks come with Stainless steel screws.  But, we don't use them.  So in reality it is more of a size and instruction issue than a material composition.

Side note, It was very disappointing to sacrifice working drivers to use as a spacer
