Decided to check the condition of my U-joint since my I/S has 71, 000 miles.
Everything went very smooth on the disassembly. I had a spare U-Joint to install but the original had no lateral play
at all and went back in.
I was following Chet's procedure and had a new boot to install. Well, it "was" new. I think I almost wore it out!

I used lithium grease on the boot and put the output shaft side in first, as the procedure suggested. That side went on with no
problem. Then I got to the swing arm side and couldn't get it to go. So I pulled the boot off of the output shaft side and
tried starting one side and tried to roll it around as others suggested. That didn't work.

I tried starting it on one side and pulling all three tabs outward(with only two hands). That didn't work.
I tried to stick my hand in the middle and push outward on the boot and guide it onto the swing arm....that didn't work.

I had spent a good hour trying to get it(is that a record?) and what complicated matters is I didn't have good lighting.

Finally, I searched through the Tech Board and found where Lady Draco suggests to roll the boot back onto itself and then push it up
against the swing arm and then unroll it. This worked flawlessly on the first attempt. By seating the rolled back portion against the swingarm, the outer lip can't go into the inside.

I know this will come up again. Hopefully, Lady Draco's method will save a lot of frustration for others!
Soooo, thank you so much, Tracy. I thought I had turned my Interstate into a 780lb paperweight!

The front is an Avon Cobra that's almost run it's useful life.

The rear is a Yokohama Avid Envigor in the 205/60R 16 size.

I have about 3 thousand miles on it and it shows no signs of wear yet. Several on the board run this tire. I paid about 115 but could
have gotten it cheaper on the Net. I bought from a local shop.

I hate that thing.   tickedoff

It takes me a full afternoon to go thru all the choice swear words and phrases I have stored away.  And I still ran out before it was back on.  You heathen son of donkey's cousin, may your manhood rot off and be eaten by wild pigs. (paraphrasing)

After I did get it on, I found a small tear.  No way I was taking it back off again, so I used several coats of liquid electrical tape on the slice.  I hope it is working, so far so good.

Good one, Jess...reminds me of the Dad in the "Christmas Story" when he worked on the furnace... I kept my cool pretty good last night cuz I had heard all the horror stories. But I wasn't even close to getting the rear side on until rolling it back. I was soooo relieved when it went on first time.

It is easy to put the boot on if you take the starter off.

Putting the starter back on, though, is lots harder than putting
the boot on  Smiley ...
