I have a quick question...

I'm helping my neighbor change the rear end final drive oil on his 2005 1300 VTX.... I filled it back up level and it took lots of oil. The owner's manual seems to imply, but it's not clear that you should fill it on it's side stand.  I have it up on my lift now dead level.

Anyone out there know if it should be filled on it's side stand or level.  My Valk I filled dead level....

Is there any damage from having 1 or 2 ounces too much in the rear end?

We used the Honda 80W90 stuff...

Thanks.

I would make sure what the book says......I never heard of one that is filled on the side stand.  The extra (if its extra) may blow out the vent.  Could be slippery but I doubt it would damage the drive

since the vtx final drive is on the sidestand side (low side) of the bike I don't think you'll overfill it on the sidestand.  Follow the manual...that's how I did it on my Wife's 05' VTX 1300S.

overfill is always a problem. The oil will start to churn air into it. air bubbles are a poor lubricate.

I use Amsoil 75w90. maybe .5 mpg better.  A sealed gear box (final drive) is the perfect application for a syn oil.

I use the Mobil One 75w/140 fill it on the side stand and dont have a problem. I generally dont fill it till it comes out just a bit under and never had a problem. It takes till its really over filled till it starts to cause a problem and then really not to much.

Thanks for the advice...

I'm still tryin' to figure out if  should it be level or on its side stand when you refill it?

I had it on my motorcycle lift last night and we filled it  with the bike level.  The owner's manual was not worded clearly, it talked about checking the level while on its side stand.  So I'm thinking we overfilled it.   We'll open the filler  hole and when it's on the side stand, we'll let some oil drain out until it's the right level.

It took more oil than my Valk  drive... that's what made me think we over-filled it.

by the way, the old oil that was in there was original (4years old) and came out kinda milky colored...sort of dirty greenish looking. The bike only has 3,000 miles on it.

Robert.....I fill mine on the sidestand when I service it on the bike......If you measure 150cc it wont overflow when you pour it in on the sidestand, and then you know you have just the right amount

Thanks Chris but I'm not that exacting when it comes to rear oil. No harm in a bit overfill and after what I have seen as far as levels in most cases there really isn't a problem to be a little over. Actually I did a experiment on the rear end one time. The hole that goes into the drive shaft area that everyone says needs to be open for lube well I know that they really dont work for this but I wanted to see how much it would take to see some visible traces on the shaft. Lets just say that you have to have it on the side stand and fill it as much as you can then it comes out that hole and believe it or not washes the lube away. So much for that hole and lubrication. I admire your attention to detail I dont know I just cant bring myself to do that. Grin

I service several different bikes for people and have always filled it to the bottom of the fill plug hole when the bike was level.  Most all of them, GL1800's, GL1500's both Wing and Valk, and 1800 and 1300 VTX's, have taken about 6-8 ounces, but I have a pump on a barrel, so that's just an approximation (pretty sure it's 2oz per pump, and they all take 3-4 pumps).  As mentioned, the X's final drive is on the low side on the side stand, and I would imagine it would be nearly impossible to overfill that way.
