Did you have to pull the motor to change the gears?
  Thanks Dennis

yeah but the bike needed a teardown anyway. i pulled wheels, brakes, final drive, carbs, everything so just dropping the motor wasnt that big of a deal.  thanks to this board i knew exactly what i was getting in to!

hey wizard sorry i just figured out how to read messages here...i think i send a reply with address and phone. let me know if you didnt get it and ill resend it.

someone asked my mileage the bike had 51000 but it had sat several years. the petcock failed, my best guess, in the past few months while the previous owner was trying to sell it. when the battery couldnt overpower the hydrolock, the jumped it off a 3/4 ton diesel truck. that really spun the starter!! he told me it was shortly after that the bike started making a clanking noise when running the starter, if it engaged at all.

ouch

I looked at that bike before Xmas. The fork tubes are in bad shape my friend. Good luck on this project. I'm in Santa Fe. Maybe Wizard and i can make that long ride to do a lil meet and greet.

thanks joevalk!! yeah it looks like someone had a good time riding a lot of seawall miles with a south breeze...i brushed the corrosion off and gonna ride like this till i find an affordable replacement. i am also going to replace the intake tubes and timing belt cover for the same reasons at the same time. poor thing is just gonna have to ride ugly for a minute while i save more money.

A good project to paint all the chrome and exposed surfaces. Powder coat maybe? Black everything out.

heres the photo gallery. i rode it the first time today. still need to tie up a few loose ends, like install the dks tire etc...but in two weeks i disassembled and rebuilt the cars, then did it again to fix a mistake, replaced the starter gears, welded the cracked case, replaced the brakes, rebuilt the clutch cylinders, bled all those fluids, oil and filter...will be redone in a few hundred miles...there was a lot of gear teeth in the case...got some of the peeling custom paint off the front fender, desmogged (government is inefficient...thus anything the government wants on an engine makes it inefficient....thus i remove it...) crankcase breather filter installed, of course a new manual petcock and fuel lines, and im sure theres more im missing. thank you wizard, and everyone else on this board...im sure my girlfriend thinks ive been looking at porn all hours of the night but ive really just been on here researching!! anyway it fired up this morning and we went for a spin. its gonna be a good summer!

You have done great thing to breath life back into the old girl ! Most would not have jumped into such a big project and dumped it for parts. You have done a fantastic job and it will only get better from here !    cooldude    cooldude    cooldude

it was a blast...cant wait for a wrench party, or to get to help out at "the barn"....

grandpa was a cat mechanic. he had steam engines, putt putt engines, a tractor powered by a chevy 4cyl motor that they cut clean in half so it was an out of balance two cylinder. it had an awesome sound though. anyway this kind of stuff has always fascinated me.

i love this bike just from working on it. everything seems to make sense.

maybe wizard is right, "you dont pick a valk....a valkyrie picks you"
