Hi All
Looks like I might have to do a frame swap to get a title for the valk I got from a salvage yard
It has 75000 miles on it
Are there any parts in particular that I should just replace since I have it apart
I plan on replacing the wheel barrings, brakes, spark plugs, timing belts, vacuum hoses, fuel lines and that sort of thing
Anything I should look for as I take it apart or problems I might run into
Are there any special tools I might need
Another thing is dsmog  Should I do this or just put it back together as it is
Any thoughts would be appreciated
Thanks

Good time to do the desmog - because you are removing the engine from the frame you should be able to remove all the piping etc. intact and save it in case there is ever a demand that it be put back on.

What was the extent or damage?????

If the donor bike (Interstate??) is running and driveable you can check the clutch and brakes and decide if you should dig into them at all.  With a frame replacement it is a good time to consider other repairs or frequently done mods as you will likely have the pieces off and so a large portion of the work is already in progress and with a little extra work and cost you can have the mod completed.

Assuming that you don't know any history on the salvage bike and that you are getting it for a low buy-in cost and want to put together a bike that you will keep for several years you may want to consider the following (amongst other things), inspection to determine repairs needed:

- rear wheel bearings
- U-joint and boot, inspect drive shaft, pinion cup etc for wear, drive coupling, lube and new o-rings
- swing arm bushings
- cage nut mod for future
- shock bushings
- check petcock (reseal??)
- alternator check (Ken Hemings has rebuild parts), drive element??
- buzz bolt fix during repairs
- steering head bearings
- front wheel bearings
- string check forks?????
- maintenance on start switch and turn signal switch
- install relay and panel for accessories
- install relays for headlights and running lights
- taillight mod
- clean carbs
- check fuel tank for corrosion, clean and seal
- clean all ground attaching points, add an "engine to frame" ground strap
- clutch lever bushing
- replace all fluids
- air filter
- studs, nuts and gaskets for exhaust
- exhaust mods to suit tastes (condition of existing pipes?????)
- stainless brake and clutch lines
- kickstand bolt for retainer spring
- quick detach mod for trunk

Madmike
Thanks for all the advise
The interstate I am starting with is very drivable the only reason I have to change the frame is because the DMV will not give me a title for this VIN number because it has been branded as junk in there computer system.
This a lot of work for nothing   Angry
At this point I have a motion pending in district court asking a judge to give me a court order to get title
this BS has already cost me over $1000 and the hearing isn't till next month and I still might be SOL
The only thing I had to replace to make the bike legal to ride was a front turn signal
the left side of the faring is scratched up but I bought a bra for the bike and you cant even see it \
The saddle bags need to be painted and there is a small dent in the gas tank
That's it  Undecided
As far as I'm concerned the bike should never have been totaled
If I wanted I could remove the bags and trunk and have fixed the bike for under $100
I think someone screwed the insurance company on this one but that is just my thought
The way things are going  I probably will not be riding the bike until next summer if I'm lucky Sad

Thanks again

The ebay frames are $300. Push comes to shove, couldn't you buy one and just transfer the the VIN sticker, instead of all the parts? I would rather spend five minutes with a razor blade than two weeks with a torque wrench. Probably not legal, but just thinkin'...

Hi again
The vin of your bikes are not only an the sticker on the head but also stamped into the frame on the left side under the gas tank
The frames on Ebay are from pinwall right
They have the same problem as mine.  If you look at the auction it says "no title issued /bill of sale only"
that is what I currently have so that will not help Sad
More than likely they are from totaled bikes bought at insurance auctions
