I've got a new-to-me set of bags for my 97 "bumblebee" that I want to paint up in the same colors. The paint code for the pearl yellow is Y130P,, it is a two part paint with a yellow basecoat and a pearl top coat. I could not find it with any of the online cheapie paint supply outfits I have used in the past, so I went to our local paint supplier, and after much messing around, he said he could supply it. I told him I needed one pint of each and he told me the total for the color was $200. $200 for a pint of paint sounds pretty high to me,,, granted, I am old enough that I remember spraying an entire car with lacquer for 50 or 60 bucks. Now I know those days are gone, but $200 for one pint of one color,,,, I still need the black, reducer, hardener, clearcoat, red pinstripping, etc. ect. I mean I just want to paint my saddle bags.. Are there any paint guys out there that know of a way acquire some of this paint for less money??? Any information will be appricated.

Pancho I recently had a set of OEM bags painted to match my 97 Bumble bee and I had the shop try to match it they computer scanned it and was NOWHERE CLOSE to the same color. So The only vendor I could find that had the paint was US paint and it was more than $200 and it is a two part as you stated they sent me the hardener and clear , everything needed. It matched perfectly I now have a fairing being painted to match and wouldn't buy the paint anywhere else. They are the exclusive supplier for paint to the American Honda motorcycle division. I called and ordered it on the phone and were very pleasant to talk with and very helpful. Shipping is high but worth it in my opinion. http://www.uspaint.com/paints/Honda-Valkyrie-GL1500.asp

Pint of each color , the hardner and clear only came in a larger size don't remember because my painter has it but I figured hey I just spent $500 on OEM bags and $800 on a fairing so why not spent the $$ for the correct paint. I am happy with what I got for what I paid.

I think I'll give them a ring on Monday and see about that kit, thanks. You are going to have to post a couple of pictures when that rig is back together,,, seems like we are both looking at the same type of project.
Hey RJ,, I am planing on spraying the paint myself, and like Bighead said
"I had the shop try to match it they computer scanned it and was NOWHERE CLOSE'
I need to get the right paint to match the rest of the bike.

Was that all from one pint of color, or did you make more than one order?

I took my parts to my painter and just told him I wanted them black and shiny.
Black is cheaper.

If you have a NAPA store that has body supply , it would be worth checking with them. Most any good automotive paint suppliers can mix it for you. Tell them up front that you do not pay for a color mismatch. I think I paid around the $200.00 mark for my strawberries and cream on my bags. Also , not knowing what bags you have , I made mine seamless. Tourer bags with the seam filled in. I ran a hacksaw blade in the seam to remove all wax and debris , not to cut thru , Just to clean it out. Put painters tape on both sides of the seam and use J-B weld to fill and level with a body (putty)knife. let dry and remove tape and sand. If you need more filler , use more tape as it is easier to sand only the area you need . Then sand the entire bag and use spot filler as needed.

I've had the same problem with the Bumblebee paint when checking with local shops to paint my OEM bags. Prices are ridiculous because of the paint cost even when I get someone willing to do it.

Local shop here with a computer color match system gave me a quote for $100.00 ish for one bag. Said he was certain it would be 10 bucks either way. Green and silver with the gold pin stripe. RIDE SAFE.

As others have stated, the color match at local shops is usually anything but a match with these colors.

Well, after checking the suggestions, I have come to the conclusion that $200 for a pint of the basecoat and top pearl coat for "Hot Rod Yellow Pearl", is a pretty good deal. Since I don't really want to take the time to get set up to paint a project like that right now (two color graphics with the red pinstripping), I think I will shoot the bags with a flat black enamel that can be easily sanded off when I get ready, I really want to get them on the bike and get back to the priority projects.

When matching my 2000 bumblebee yellow a few years ago, my paint and body guy sent me to the local Akzo Nobel supplier and, using a camera and software, they matched it perfectly on the first try.

Does the 2000 have pearl? According to Dag's Valkyrie Genealogy Colors page, it is the Y130P Pearl Yellow, and while it has the word "Pearl" in its name, mine is not pearlescent/opalescent/iridescent. It isn't nacreous, either. Found that one while checking spelling... I can probably find some pics that show the match, but they are guaranteed not to be as nice as Joe's pic. Wow!

The reason I ask is that the guy who scanned my paint came up with a formula that didn't read the pearl top coat and paint was a flop. The painter did a great job but it didn't match, that is why I went with the supplier of honda paint for the MC division of North America.

I have a paint question, can the hard bags be painted with Lacquer ( like duplicolor spray cans?) or will it soften the ABS Plastic?

NO,, do not use lacquer paint or thinners on ABS,, it will soften and damage it.
Well after looking into it, it seems that some do it all the time,,,,, it seems that the softening gives really good adhesion to ABS.. ???
I would look into it a bit more before I did it,,, I always thought it was a no no.
