My new-to-me I/S tank is in transit. Cheesy laugh cooldude

Is there anything different that I must do for a successful swap... like changing the seat, replacing rubber supports, etc. Embarrassed

Would all the hoses and hardware from one tank fit the other? Undecided ???

Thank you for your comments.

As you indicated, the seat will probably need to be changed out.  Usually the IS Seat will work on the Tourer/Standards with a little more gap between the seat and the tank but the Tourer/Standard seat does not work (well...anyway).  If you have a aftermarket seat, such as a Mustang, I think you are good to go.  I am not sure about the other seat makers.

The only other thing you are going to need to do is block off the level sending unit.  There used to be a plate available for this purpose but I do not know if it is still available.  As an alternative, you can just leave the sending unit in place and just don't connect the wires (you don't have a place to plug them in anyway on your bike).

Otherwise, everything else should be plug and play.  Petcock, vent line, gas cap will all fit on the new tank.

The wife's 03 Standard (Trike) has a I/S tank on it.  Used the OEM seat for two years. No problems whatsoever.

Just received a Russell Day-Long for it made from the OEM seat pan.... also no fitment problems.

If you use a seat made for the Std. or Tourer, the nose of the seat will abraid the tank. Get some clear shipping tape used on boxes, etc., and stick it to the tank area under the seat nose.

Just to be clear, Mustang is the only aftermarket seat maker whose seats are interchangeable between std/tourer and interstate.  Any bigger nose std/tourer seat should snap down with an IS tank, but may/will rub the tank and/or kink the nose of the seat up a bit.  Either protect the tank with tape (under the big nose), or get your seat nose trimmed at almost any upholstery shop, or maybe do it yourself (pull a couple staples only at the nose, pull only the cover around the nose back, file/cut a bit of material off, pull the cover back tight, and staple it back under the lip)

CAVEAT:  Corbin seats are filled with concrete, so I don't know if their std/tourer seats can even be made to snap down on an IS tank.  Roll Eyes angel

Got a new Mustang Solo. Beautiful, but it does not take a backrest and it is about 1" taller. Roll Eyes
I'll try it again. It looks pretty good.... just a little too high for me. Embarrassed

I travel across the USA with a Corbin on my I/S. It looks good but literally a pain in the ass!  Lips Sealed

Paxton...
You will have the block off plate, just install your gas cap.
Make sure the vent tube is clear, just blow some air thru it before putting on the bike.

Maybe a good time to rebuild your fuel shut off valve or replace with a pingle shut off..

I you decide to run the velocity stack, you will have to shim the front of the tanks about 5/16", that creates a new problem because the tank is no longer sitting on the frame/pads.
So you can pick up some water pipe insulating foam that will go over the existing frame pads. Its the 360 pad with a split in the middle to wrap piping.
Sounds like you got the seat conceren already addressed.

enjoy..!

First off, I'll say that I am probably a Russell Daylong sycophant... I consider them the best seat on the market, bar none.

I have had them all... OEM, post-2000 OEM, Mustang, Corbin, Ultimate. Once I got my Russell, I have never looked back and every motorcycle I own (that I use to travel) will have a RDL. I have put over 30,000 miles on my Russell... still love every minute of it.

On my Interstate I have a rider/passenger combo. Leather on top, vinyl on the sides. Have the rain cover, worth it with leather so I'm not sitting on a wet seat if the Valk sits out in the hotel parking lot in a storm. No backrest, I have never liked them, I feel that they push into my lower back... I slouch in the seat a lot. That one cost right around $750, I think.

On my wife's Standard (Trike), we just got her a leather/vinyl driver seat only with cover. That one cost $600. No backrest for her either.

The seat is made to conform to your height, weight, inseam, etc. It definitely isn't a marketing ploy IMO as I have done 1000-1500 mile days on the RDL with NO discomfort whatsoever.

The custom making of the RDL to you makes for sometimes having to wait to get one. For mine, I sent in my dimensions and pictures in January. They gave me a "build date" of mid-March. So I had to wait 2.5 months for them to start it and then it took them a week to build it and another week to ship it back (CA to OH). Got it in mid-April. You have to be patient when getting an RDL. That being said, for my wife's, I sent in the order and they wanted the old seat the next week and I got it back in two weeks after that... about a month total. Spring is a busy time for them as people are getting seats for riding season.
