So how long is going to take me to get across the state on 70 coming out of Colorado? went to Mesa Verde park today.
An eternity.... I'd withdraw the comment but then I'd feel unfair raggin on that slog across west Texas...or the run across I-10...or any of a hundred places I love to complain about...but always ride anyway... I've even complained about riding in the mountains...of course that had more to do with the friggen snow... See...the destination is just an excuse... If I skipped your state (and all the other places) what would I have to talk about riding-wise? "I went for a ride and nothing happened." Hmmm...needs more flavor methinks!

But I CAN’T go around it…I’m going INTO it! I’ll be riding from my office in OKC up to the races in Topeka this Friday. One of the MOOT riders ( http://www.magnaownersoftexas.com/main.htm ) from Norman OK and I will form a two ship for the trip. We are going to depart Crossroads Mall (or somewhere else convenient) around 3:00 P.M. Anyone interested in tagging along feel free!

I recall one of the trips my wife and I took, we went the full length of Kansas and kept seeing these roadside memorials that are placed where drivers have died. I kinda wondered aloud to my wife how come there were so many out in the middle of nowhere, I mean...there's nothing out here to hit. She said they died of boredom....same thing she said about crossing Montana. Don't take it too serious. That comes from someone that while driving west from the Rocky Mtn. park entrance in Colorado, she commented about the "huge anthills" out in the prairie. Honey, those aren't anthills, they're prairie dog mounds. Then every time she'd see one run across the highway she's slow down so she wouldn't run over it. Honey, if you keep doing that we won't hit Utah until this time next week. But they're so cute. Yes, and if you run over one, that reduces the population to only 29.999 quadrillion.

I want to say that I loved riding thru Kansas. It was blooming with life, a little hot but so is Tennessee right now. It was the first State that I've been thru that my manual cruise control worked without loosing any rpms.

Like others have said and done .... my ride across Kansas on I-70 gave me a new definition for FLAT! A buddy said that it is so flat that at times you will be able to see the curvature of the Earth and he was right. But when I rode to the last InZane in Frisco, CO., back in 2006, I road across the northern part of the state on US 36. I found this much more enjoyable, not as flat (found a curve or two along with a rise/drop in elevation) and a lot more enjoyable.

Come on back anytime Crazyhorse, that's the nicest version of of Kansas is so flat I've ever heard! FYI, I'm not seriously bashing anyone, Kansas is one flat long boring ride if you do I-70 across Kansas and eastern Colorado. Try the other roads sometimes, KS400 is one of Britman and myself's favorites. Raymond

About a month ago I rode from Colorado crossed northern Kansas, I70 to Colby, Hwy 24 to Cawker City (Home of the World's Largest Ball of Twine), up to Hwy 36 into St. Joseph, MO. Call me strange, but I thought that was a really nice area to ride, not the most action packed thrill ride, but a very cool ride through the farmlands.

It goes through Wichita and Dodge City... I always wanted to go through those places... what other things make it a good road? And they don't care about Dallas, Texas And they don't care about Wichita If you're ever in Oklahoma You better move around the law -Mike

I second Hwy 36!!!
Two years ago I was coming back from west Denver and I had seen where 36 starts right at Byers,Co and goes all the way across the state. I filled up at the exit of I-70 and hwy 36 off ramp and asked the guy behind the counter about what the highway was like and he said that you will see mostly farmers cruising the road but don't worry they are really friendly.
I took it all the way to Hiawatha and came down US75 to Topeka. That was really a wonderful road. As I started my journey on US36 I stumbled across a town Joes,Colorado. I took a picture (today I am going to figure out how to post pictures) of the sign. Anyhow, as I motored down the highway I noticed everyone would wave as the passed by, so I started to wave back and before you know it I was at my turn to head south on US75. The folks that drive that road are very friendly and when you would fill up and someone was pumping on the other side it wasn't long before they were asking you where you are heading and "nice bike".
I must agree with others that this is a very quite, yet friendly option to take to cross the state of kansas. Don't get in a hurry though, speed limits are much lower than I-70 and lots of small towns to ride through.
Great choice....

My memories of Kansas are a bit different
It was July 4th I left the Bishop Hotel in Lawrence and headed to Denver to pick up Bonnie
I think around 10 or so the Kansas 500 came on the Christian broadcasting network on the fm so I was enjoying Dana Kirkpatrick trying to stay in 1st place and cruising around 75 or so due west near Salina when this BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP comes over the radio The scenery had been really nice, like when you are on the ocean and you can see forever. It was a bit windy but with the air wings open it wasnt bad.
Anyway there is a second BEEEEEEEEEEEEP This is a tornado warning the voice says, If you are in your home, the voice says, get into your shelter or if no shelter in the basement and if outside seek shelter, if no shelter lie down in a gully with your arms over your head I did not hear what the heck to do if I am crusing down the road
I had noticed these ominous clouds that probably went up 40-50ooo feet to my south but its so flat I never really noticed that they were getting closer. The sky ahead was clear blue
Right at Salina I got gas and a mountain dew and headed west again
BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP same warning softball sized hail in Salina, Oh crap I just gassed in Salina
I looked leaned way back in the seat and looked up and saw funnels, they were not touching the ground.
It started raining on me from behind cause I would outrun it then it catches me
I was pretty darn scared I will admit, closed the air wings and ran that Valk due west at around 95 until reserve was about to be kickin in and then got gas near the border of colorado, think it was colby or something like that
I wasnt as scared again until later that day when I got caught just west of Limon in a thunderstorm from HELL with 91 mph wind Have you ever been hit by sagebrush moving at highway speed while on the Valk?
Kansas and eastern Colorado are nice places to say you have been to and survived
I will take the northeast where all our tornados are only F1's

Enjoyed riding with you accross Kansas your lead was easy to follow flying down I-70. Good milkshake in Topeka not to mention the buger and fries. Jim L caught up with me in Kansas City and we rode together to St Louis. I stopped at the Cabela's store what a store wish we had one in Tn. Looking forward to riding with you in the furture.

It was a great ride Crazyhorse You were a great wingman and new where to be at all times... If you didn't see it posted earlier... The Valkyrie that hooked on to the back of us was Sharkey. I am glad you enjoyed the burger and shake at Spangles and yes I love to just hang out at Cabela's. If you get their at the right time you can watch the fish get fed... It's pretty spectacular... Anyhow, glad you made it home safe and look forward to riding with you again.... It was great to visit and hang out with you and thank you for the strawberry pie, it was yummy!! Even with beer

I just returned from Inzane and took 36 to Oberlin then dropped south to Hwy 9 and followed it to Osborne. Then I caught 24 the rest of the way through the state and found it much better than I-70. Hwy 9 had lots of curves and no traffic. It was my most enjoyable trip through Kansas.

If you missed the sunrise looking east down I70 and the star filled night sky from about anywhere you missed an amazing sight. I grew up in Colby. Coming up out of Houston we took I135 from OKC to I 70 on the way to Inzane. On the way back we had a Wizard of Oz fan with us, so we routed south the Liberal to see Dorothy's house and the yellow brick road. Came out of Colorado on US50 from Pueblo and meandered down to Liberal. The roads were straight and sometimes a little hilly, but good farm country for an old NW Kansas son.

I like the way you think, I thought Kansas was a beautiful State. Had lunch (Montana Mike's) in your home town on my way back to Tennessee. Wish I had meet you and your lovely wife while at Inzane.
