Looking for advice --- Bike to Bike communications

  I have finally convinced Kendall that we need to check into Bike to Bike Communications. 

So here is my question --- Do you have one?  Which One?  Pros vs. Cons?

I would really like to hear from folks using a bike to bike communication set --- what type of range can we expect?  What is the best ones?  Which ones do we want to avoid?

Your honest opinions are appreciated.

Des, I like the J & M system.  You have basic 40 channel cb, weather channel, a adapter for MP3 player that will come through the headset.  The really good part they are in your back door in Tempe, but you probably already knew that.  The drawback is that they are pricey, customer service is second to none.  One of the service reps even rides a Valk.  Just my 2 cents worth.

There are a few choices. The J& M is CB and can cost some bucks but has longer range while the Chatterbox is FRS and short range. I’m sure there are others out there.

Look over the CB's, and get one that you can mount easily on ur Burple Bike.

I have CB's on the Trike and MGM.     MGM I hook it up if and when I'm heading out on a Road Trip.  Actually it goes in my back pocket while in motion, at rest stops, I slip it in the saddlebag.    Doesn't seem to make any difference where it is, it has a very good range...

I don't see the one on the Trike.    I got it from Cycle Com, and it is a modified Midland, they added the Push to Talk (PTT), and an outlet for an external speaker, which I lay behind me on the top of the seat.   If I have a helmet on, I pull the external & it comes into my helmet speakers.

Initial cost is pricey, but if you divide it over 22 years, it is damn cheap.....  I put it in the Trike 22 years ago for like $175.    Can't find it for that today, but, I've had no problems with it or the cords.

I also have a J&M helmet setup, and I can't keep cables in working order,  J&M replaced then a couple of times & then informed me they wouldn't do it again as no one keeps a bike or unit that long......  So rather than argue with them, I just don't recommend their equipment to any one.

We've been using the Chatterbox GMRSx1 units our Inzane run(still travelling home to New Jersey)
and have been  satisfied with the results.

This was the cheaper way to go for my brother as he didn't have a cb on his GoldWing...
I wired the on board charger(opitional) on to my interstate  but didn't wire it to my brotheres Wing yet.
This will allow us to ride all day and still be able to use the units..7-8 hours of use
on the unit without the charger...we just swap units when his battery is low.
The units take a lot of tiime to initially charge up ...12-14 hours.
maximum effective range seems to be about 1 mile...
They are mounted with RAM mounts(extra)..

My wife and I use the Scala Rider Q2.  It has good clear communication, bluetooth capabilities, and an intercom if your rider has a set.  It is waterproof (been caught in the rain a few times).  I have all my music on my phone and can play it through the headset, which is nice.

We used the Q-2 this summer on my Interstate and were very happy with it. I like its flexibility overall but was not happy with the ipod plug in a speed, the wind noise canceled it out a lot.

CB is the best if you ever want to talk to anyone else.  Otherwise, you are limited to just those who install the same equipment, which is few.
