Just as the title asks, how did the Valkyrie get tagged with the Dragon as it's symbol or logo. Just curious. I tried the search function but didn't find an answer. I kind of doubt Honda stuck it on our fat ladies. Could be wrong though. Anyone know?

I thought it was because a valkyrie was a mythical women that rode a dragon to retrieve the fallen soldiers off the battlefield to Valhalla . But I could have the story wrong.

I thought that might be true also but; According to this web site: http://www.viking-mythology.com/valkyries.phpValkyries in Norse Mythology The Valkyries: Chooser of the Slain The Valkyries are female warlike virgins, who mounts upon horses and arms themselves with helmets and spears. They decides who will die in a battle. They will hover over the battlefield, like birds over their prey. There will be six, nine, or thirteen Valkyries at a time. They will select among half of those who dies in battle. And then bring them to Valhalla.
The other half will go to the goddess Freya’s afterlife field Folkvangr. Freya always has the first pick, of the fallen Vikings. Odin allows some of the maidens to take the form of beautiful white swans, but if a Valkyrie is seen by a human without her swanlike disguise, she will become an ordinary mortal and can never again return to Valhalla. I also didn't see any references to dragons in the list of names. List of Valkyrie names in Norse Mythology Valkyries The meaning of their name Brynhildr, she was also called Brünnhilde or Brynhild. She was a shieldmaiden and Brynhildr was the daugther of Budli. Bright Battle Eir, she was a goddess and or a Valkyrie, she was associated with medical skill. Peace, Clemency, Help, or Mercy Geiravör Spear Vör/Goddess Geirdriful Spear Finger Geirönul The one charging forth with the spear Geirskögul, it was two separate or an individual Valkyrie. Swan White Hildr, she had the power to revive the dead on the battlefields, and used it to maintain the everlasting battle between Hedin and Högni. Battle Hjalmprimul Helmey Clatterer, or Female Warrior Hervör alvitr, she was the sister of the Valkyrie Hlaðguðr svanhvít. All Wise, or Strange Creature Hjörprimul The Sword Warrioress Hlökk Noise, Battle Hrist Shake, Quake, The Quaking one Hrund Pricker Kara The Wild, or Stormy One Mist Cloud or Mist Ölrun Ale Rune Randgrior or Randgrid Shield Truce, or Shield Destroyer Ráðgríðr Council Truce, The Bossy Reginleif Power Trace, or Daughter of the Gods Rota Sleet and Storm Sanngrior, she has been the mentor of the Norse hero Sigurd. Very Violent, Very Cruel Sigrun Victory Rune Skalmöid Sword Time Skeggöld Axe Age Skuld Dept or Future Sveid Vibration or Noise Svipul Changeable Tögn Silence Trima Fight Thrud, she may or may not have been a Valkyrie, but there was a Valkyrie with the name Thrud. Thrud was the daughter of Thor and Sif. She is the half sister to Magni and Modi. Strength or Power.Well, that didn't copy well but, still no reference to the dragon.

The question was not about the origin of Valkyrie, but of the Dragon nickname. We all know Honda chose the name Valkyrie to honor the plot to kill Hitler. (sarcasm) I have not heard or read this, but..... I always assumed the moniker Dragon was related to a Japanese bike (even thou built in the US) and that Japan (and Asia in general) has historically revered the dragon as a mythological, powerful, fire-breathing beast. Dragons can also be found in Middle Ages/Crusades family, monarchy, and heraldic crests from Russia/Europe/Britain, but is not much used in the West, like it has been throughout the Far East. Thus the famous Bruce Lee movie... Enter the Dragon. These dragons on my (and others) side covers are definitely of Asian origin, both in manufacture and spirit.

Ya think?
I'm not trying to make any waves here, I just don't think it's all that applicable.

Back on Sept. 1, 1996, the first internet site dedicated to the Honda Valkyrie, "The Valkyries' Lair," was launched. The site, built by Craig Buhl, contained the tag line, "For Those Who Ride the Dragon." Craig referred to the Valkyrie as the Dragon because of the definition of a dragon: "*Dragon (n.) A legendary fire breathing beast of great size; renowned for its immense power and ability to fly." The moniker caught on and we continue riding dragons to this day. http://web.archive.org/web/20010205005400/http://www.dragonriders.org/thevalk.htm

Thanks for that information. I did use the search function, guess I didn't look deep enough into The Valkyries' Lair. I may not agree with the symbolism but, that's OK. Now I know.

Just guessing but, I'm thinking that's because your background is white. Don't know for sure but I changed the color to red since you brought it up. I chose yellow because it shows up on my dark gray background real well. Sorry about that.
