I had planned a route that would have taken us on some back roads through Pike's National Forest.  We Picked up JimL's wife at the airport in Colorado Springs and then headed up 24hwy then 67 hwy and over to Pine, Co via hwy126.  But we only made it to Deckers when we found that Hwy126 out of Deckers was closed due to wash out..

left to right: Pharmboy, Stude31, JimL

We decided that it couldn't be that bad of dirt roads and was better than turning around so we headed on up to the river valley and sure enough it was washboard city...

PharmBoy managing to ride in the tire tracks....

Anyhow we made it out safe and we can honestly say we went dirt bike riding..

You passed right by my house.  Too bad 126 washed out, as it is a great ride!
Sounds like you followed the South Platte River through Trumbull and Nighthawk, then the pavement ends, and that's where I usually turn around.  Good for you that you made it, that washboard is a b**ch in a pickup!

Jay,

We probably should have turned around, too.  But it adds to the memories of my first InZane trip...  I'll never forget it!!  Yeah those washboards are a pain alright!!!  Angry

My wife who was on the back of my bike...tells me after the fact that we passed within 3 feet of a snake that was coiled up on the side of that dirt road.  She knew not to mention it to me at the time!

we can have some pretty serious washboard sand roads here in Florida.....especially after it's rained for a spell. Some will shake the fillings out of yer teeth...no thanks on the Valk

Dirt is for racin'......asphalt is for getting to the dirt track.  I'm not racin' my Valk.   Grin

I agree...  On gravel speed is your friend!!!

When i first got my gps installed on the bike I took my cousin for a ride (he has a vtx).   I know for sure that I put in the settings for no gravel roads.  Well, it wasn't long that we were down by Fort Scott, KS and we were on roads "less traveled on".   The roads were like lost alley ways that had grass growing up in the middle and we were surrounded by corn fields.  I think the farmers drove in the fields rather than the road!!  The gravel was really like sand.  We had to go pretty fast to stay on top of the road.  It was a bit tricky but oh the memories will always remain.

So I think he has learned to not follow me when I say, "let's just plug it into the gps and let it take us there".  Nope he would rather go get a map and ride the interstate.  That's a whole new meaning to riding the "back roads".

Wishing all a safe return home...
