Hey all,
How often must the timing belt be replaced? My belt is the original from 97. I've got about 30000 miles on the bike. Not too worried milage wise, more worried about drying out and cracking. Do these belts have an age limit to them and if so, how do I know I'm not buying a "new" old one the dealer had on his shelf since 97. Just thinking ahead a bit as riding season is just around the corner here in Pa.
TIA

I replaced mine a couple of years ago on my tourer..... it didn't have near that many miles, but like you I was concerned more with drying out/cracking with age.... I got Gates belts off Amazon for a fraction of what many want to charge for `em.

As one old Honda mechanic once told me; "these belts are guaranteed to last the life of the engine....you break a belt, that's the life of the engine."  I check mine periodically and will replace in the near future due to aging and nothing more.

You'll dry out and crack long before these cam belts will.

Honda has no recommended change intervals, they just say to check them at 100K.

However, its been my experience that timing belts on anything look great right up to the time that they decide to break.

Our engines are not clearance engines. So, to me, it only makes sense to change them, even if for peace of mind, every once in a while.

I replaced mine last year with 70 k. The old belts looked fine. I also replaced the tensioner pulleys. I did however did a mod and installed Gates pulleys and Gates belts. The total investment was under $80.

First....there are two belts not just one like on small cars.  Secondly, you should look at them...remove the front cover and take a look.  If there is no deterioration then Id say they are good for a bit longer.  Note:  Some black rubberish material (from the belts) that may be on the inside of the cover is NORMAL and not a sign of deterioration.  Thirdly DO NOT GO TO THE HONDA DEALER.  The belt you get at NAPA or at the dealer are made in the same shop (gates) only one has a Honda label attached and they charge ten times more for that label.

Bought my belts some time ago but didn't install them yet.  At about 110k now.  I'll get a round tuit once I get some more pipes mods done and have time for personal work.  Got a couple other maint items waiting for the same thing.  I'm not thinking the belts are gonna suddenly fail.  Sure counting on that being true!
