I am a new Valker. Bot a '99 Std...runs smooth, has 6 into 6 TBR that I love to hear sing and gets 38mpg running 75mph. Local shop says I should jet and put some oommff into it (I thought it had oommff!). I understand my mileage will most likely suffer, but anyone have a super strong opinion here?

Most aftermarket pipes take oommff away and rejetting even takes away more.

So, Patrick. Let;s assume I do not jet but keep the TBR 6into6. Should I run a K&N air filter or a paper?

I only know what I read on the forum (on pipes); and have read more than once that Cobras can use some carb adjustment (of some sort) to recoup lost power (not necessary, but you can if you want), but that the TwoBros do not.

IMHO, if your bike is running well, getting as good a mileage as expected from 6 carbs, with no apparent issues, I'd leave it alone and keep the fuel system clean with non ethanol and fuel cleaner additives from time to time.

On air filters, do what you want.  KN may flow a little better, but paper (OE) will go longer before dirty (say 2 years) than a KN will go before it needs reoiled (say one year).  At one year, the KN may not be very dirty, but the oil is dry as dust.   A perfectly tuned Valk may get one more horsepower from a KN than an OE filter.  Being the lazy type, I like the 2yr interval better than the one.

I could be wrong.

I will second that opinion as well. Do NOT re-jet. Just as Jess stated in his post, if your bike is running well, then do not change anything. BTW, I have had my TBR's on for about 1 year, and love them. I did re-set my pilot screws out 2.25 turns.

If you are getting 38 mpg @ 75mph, don't touch anything. Buy the same gas, use the same oil, use the same toothpaste you are using. You have a winner!

i have tbrs straight, k and n, and just bought my 98. it ran like crap low end, even after cleaning the stock jets. i followed advice from the board to step the slows to 38's and now it runs perfect. i also reemed out the stock mains a tiny bit, especially 5 and 6 since they run hotter. im happy...but some guys like that super lean popping decel thing which does sound cool, especially in parking garages! i do kinda miss that. but, it runs so smooth i can walk it in 5th gear up to speed.

however...im am solidly at 32 mpg

Many thanks for the straightforward opinions. I suppose that's what this forum is for! I will happily keep using "the same toothpaste" and twitching my nose just right. I am appreciative of the confidence building comments and good direction. My plan was to sell this '99 Valk or a VTX1300 I have ridden for 7 years, but between the TBRs, the mileage and the votes of confidence from the good folks who have responded, I am most likely to remain a Valker. Be safe...JCHondo
