I have a `98 Standard with 34K on it and recently have experienced popping through the exhaust (right side primarily) during static accelleration (around 1400-2000 rpm) and during decelleration (compression braking).

I have replaced all vacuum hoses, the intake o-rings and made sure all rubber intake couplelings and clamps were installed correctly and tight.

I also replace the exhaust gaskets.

Can carb problems cause popping?  I've ran Sea Foam thorough it and I'm temped to run a large can of Techron through it on the next fill up.

Any suggestion or recommendations are welcome.

I have a '97 standard and had also the popping.

Now I finally got rid of it and I think there were 2 causes :

1) my left exhaustbolts did I tighten I don't know how many times, but each time after a ride I checked the left bolts and could tighten them more till the 7th or 8th time that it was finally O.K.
I did it with a torque-meter. So if you install new gaskets for exhaust, please check and tighten each time till they are finally good!!

2) did the carb synchronisation many times now, better cannot - I cannot, but they are very close when machine hot - this can also play to get rid of poppop I think.

This is my experience, I am glad without the pop  2funny

From your post it appears that you may have some carburetor varnish .. Don't give up with just one try with the sea-foam.. Depending on how heavy your 'dosage' was it may take couple tank fulls of good heavy doses to clean things up..

Just fixed this one myself as well...had already had bike Desmogged.....one of two things fixed it

1) I rebuilt the fuel petcock
2) I dropped the bowls on the carbs...cleaned them..and switched out the stock 35 slow jets to 38's. I think the old slows were clogged (seems a standard problem)

I had already ran through several cans of seafoam as well without luck. My petcock looked good when I broke her down, but already had the rebuild kit so did it anyway. My money is on the slow jets being clogged, most folks have switched to 38slows.

Thanks for the quick replies.  I'll double check for intake vacuum and exhaust header leaks and I'll run a large bottle of Techron through it on my next fill up.

If that doesn't fix it, I'll pull the float bowls and change the 35's to 38's.  I really don't want to have to do this, but you gotta do what ya gotta do.

Thanks again.

popping on decel is always a lean condition. ethanol in the fuel will cause a lean condition that wasn't there before ethanol.
Open up your carb mixture screws 1/2 turn at a time until it stops. all carbs screws should be the same. If u have to turn them out 4 1/2 turns then u need larger pilot jets. Unless the bike is sitting for a yr the jets will not clog. I do not know who started this thing about clogged 35s, a 38 can clog just the same. My bike sat for over a yr, only put 2k on it, never drained the bowls and no clogs.
I have posted the ingredients of seafoam before, its mostly alcohol which is already in the fuel. higher alcohol % in fuel more leaness. Why do u think the epa, govt and enviromentalists waited for all vehicles to be fuel injected to implement their plan of ethanol?
