Hey folks...

My brother-in-law has been wanting to get a bike for a while now.  He has never rode much and I would like to have a project.  I found a Honda cb 650 and I think the owner up the street said that he would sell it for about 6-700 dollars... It has flat tires, paint is in good shape, carbs need to be gone through, battery, brake lines... Etc.  Seat is in really good shape.  My question is this... Will I be hurting much to buy a bike for this price?  I don't know what they sell in really good shape but it sounds like a fun project to work on.. He also has a Yamaha 650 and wants to sell it, too... But I just want the honda!!  I don't have a picture just yet but will post one when I get a chance...

I'm needing something to put in my lift and tinker on...  My valkyrie is a machine and doesn't need tinkering.... Smiley  just needs ridden!!

Any ideas please provide...

Without a picture I'd say $350.00 to $400.00 for a non-running 650 would be a decent price range.

Key,

It is actually a cb 650 custom.. I think he said 6 or 700...  He said make me an offer and I didn't have a clue... It's in decent shape... I'll try and walk over there tomorrow and snap some pictures..  It comes with a motorcycle trailer so If I do buy them both (yamaha too).

I went to the honda650 forum and asked them as well but haven't heard any opinions as to get it or not... i think I will just for the hell of it...  I like to work on old cars and bikes...  If and when I do pick it up... I will probably try and find someone on this board that knows a little bit about these motors... they look pretty simple to work on...

I can tell you I started out with a Yahmmy 650 as my first street bike...same condition...and same price...I did the total tear down...a great project bike, always worked on cars, it was a great learning experience...rode that bike for 5 years put 10k more miles on it and sold it for $1200...

So if you can swing it, offer him $1000 for everything trailer included...worst he  can say is no...

Let us know how you make out.

The CB650 Custon was my first "real" bike.  I loved it!  Didn't take long to want something bigger, and when the CB900C came out, I made the switch.  the only thing I recall not liking about the 650 was the wimpy rear brake.  Would've been nice to have a second disc up front, too, but one was really enough.  I rode it from Austin TX to Indianapolis IN, and got rained on the whole way!  The bike was fine.
Thanks for the memory jogger!

Thanks for the advice BigRig  cooldude

The owners are retired and he just had a hip replacement and told me that he needs to get rid of some stuff so it sounds like he is willing to part with it.  I went on ebay and craigslist to see what people were asking for the bike and it's anywhere from 500 to 1600.  This one is no where close to "mint".  But, like I said it gives me something to wrench on.  Besides my old studebaker's...

Houstone, glad I could spark your memory to recall your past time!! Wink   Be careful your starting to age yourself  Grin  In 1980 i was only 3 yrs old  2funny

I'll snap a picture over the weekend and post it so you can see the condition.

BigRig... I was so close to being the youngest valk rider at Inzane   tickedoff  I think I would have been third youngest...  The guy who won it and then "lil Bull" was two years younger than me.  I was the youngest interstate rider Wink   Oh well... I don't mind not being the youngest, I carried that title all through school.  So, someone else can carry that torch I'll just sit back and observe....

All this means is I have longer to go to retire than you do!!

I would say you're in the ball park on price... last summer,  we looked all over town for a nice  650-800 cc starter bike for my 20 year old. The dealers had some older bikes...nothing lower than $2100.  We ended up finding a 1983 Honda CB650 SC (Nighthawk) in damn near perfect shape with cleaned up carbs, new tires, tune up, etc... with only 6500 miles on it.  got it for $1400.  That's about  260 miles per year!!!

At a dealer, we found a similar Yamaha 650 for about $2500 price.. so I think we did alright.   My kid hasn't even finished paying me back for it yet and he's already looking to move up.... but it's nice bike... fun to ride... easy to work on.

Generally, the motors run forever... a good starter bike.

Whipper-snapper, schmipper-snapper!
I was 25, and just started riding!  It's been HUGE fun, several hundred K miles later!  ;-)
