I can tell which coils fire which cylinders by looking at the shop manual. But I need to know which they are by their location. Yes, the tank can be pulled or lifted slightly and identify location in that manner. But, if you look closely on my post picture, you'll see I don't have OEM wiring....hence no numbered wires. So here's what I need; the coil mounted toward the front on the side frame rail fires which cylinders; of the two mounted near the petcock...which coil fires which cylinder? Once I know, I might even get some numbered tape and mark the wires so I don't have to ask next time. That's a bit of a stretch though!  Grin

Well, I know the 1-2 coil is the one on the left side of the bike mounted to the underside of the frame.  I took it off when pulling the carbs. It is in the Honda manual, page 5-4.
The other 2 are on this page, 17-11.
You can go by the wire color to determine which is which.

Hope this helps,

If no one chimes in by tomorrow morning, I'll remove my fuel tank and let you know John!  cooldude

Maybe I don't understand the question but why can't you number the wires by which plug they go to? I assume you can't follow the plug wires to the coils.

I'm a long way away from the bike right now. But, it seems to me that that coils go along with their respective cylinders, in that, the center coil runs the center cylinders. Its been awhile since I've looked at that and I usually can't remember what I had for lunch, so.....

Hi John!

I just had a "look and see"!  Smiley
The front horizontal coil fires pistons 1 & 2.
The middle vertical one: pistons 3 & 4.
The rear vertical one: pistons 5 & 6.

Bottom line: same as what Patrick said: first coil fires the front pistons; the middle coil fires the 2 middle ones and the rear one fires the rear pistons.

I thought you could tell by the GREEN TERMINAL wires on each coil.
Yellow/White = 1/2
Yellow/Blue = 3/4
Yellow/Red = 5/6

But I don't know what John is trying to accomplish.  AND my tank is not off of the bike.  Smiley

Thanks Normand, that's exactly what I needed to know. I'll write in on the wall in my shop for future reference.  cooldude

HayHauler, the wire colors aren't visible with the tank in place. Normand hit the target for me. A friend has a misfire on #3 and I suggested he substitute a different plug wire as a first step, narrow it down to whether it's the wire or cap or?? He wanted to know which coil fired #3....front, middle, or rear coil. Now we know. See ya in June.  cooldude
