It's not really a Redneck thing unless there is a can of PBR on your workbench.

I'm more interested in the base of the axle. What/how do you have it spin on?

I think we're going to need some details on that! I took a 2X4 on it's edge and with my 7/8" wood bit drilled a hole about 2 inches down. The shoulder of the front axle is between 7/8" and 1", so I wollered (technical term) out the hole until the shoulder of the axle would just barely start. I then took my dead-blow hammer and drove the axle into the hole with the plastic end of the hammer. I clamped the 2x4 in the B&D Workmate bench and added another 2x4 to strap the drill to. I clamped both of them in the bench and tapped the 2x4 with the axle in it until the tire just touched the rubber fixture in the drill. Guys that use their drill presses to spin the tire can spin it faster, but this is what I had on hand at the time. Now to get a couple of cotton buffing wheels and some rouge. Hay Jimmyt

I seriously passed looking at this post because I thought it was concerning some "Polish" rig from Poland. I didn't know what exactly, but for some reason I was thinking in terms of Polish.

So what are you using for polishing compound and how are you going to apply it? I like your wheel holding and turning device. I really was happy with what Mothers mag and aluminum polish did for my wheels. I used a power ball to apply the polish.

I wish I could get it to spin a little faster. Need a little larger diameter device to spin in the drill. It really goes too slow to get hurt. Besides, you can stop the spinning if you press too hard. I started with 320 sand paper, then to 600 and then 800. They are now smooth with no machine lines. I will start with the different colors of rouge this afternoon. I am playing Vintage Baseball this morning at a heritage festival about 60 miles from here. Guess I have to ride the Wing. Hay Jimmyt

Hay Jimmyt "goes too slow to get hurt" Yeah!!! I remember thinking that about the cement mixer.......... Your devise looks safe, Id use it (maybe not saying much) so Im not criticizing, just reminding you and all of us us IT DONT TAKE MUCH, in an instant a moving part that contacts a non moving part is going to leave a mark on the non moving part............just dont let that non moving part be YOU

I did that last year, but used a seven inch angle grinder with polishing wheels on it (sanded by hand),,,,, wheels came out great.... you will be proud of them. post some pictures when done.
I cleaned up my calipers and final drive and painted them flat black while I was at it, just to make the wheels look even better.

Here's a repost of a youtube video of a very similar idea using a HF drill press. Shows the bearing setup too.

MarkT, that is where I got the idea for my redneck rig. I just used what I had laying around. Well, I used red rouge then white on 2 different 5" wheels on my small grinder. I think it came out pretty good. I just have the other side to do then I can get the new tire mounted and put the bike back together. Hay Jimmyt

Now I have to do the other side, hit them with the Mothers polish (power ball) and get the new tire mounted. This weather is killing me not being able to ride. I am going to try some stuff called ShineSeal to seal the finish on the wheels. I will report back as to how it protects the shine from getting dull after some time. Hay Jimmyt
