I crashed my "Rat Rod Valk" today.

I had just installed "stirrups" on to my highway pegs a few days ago. My feet kept falling off the pegs and I have a short inseam. I had these "stirrups" from a previous motorcycle project, so I thought,.....what the heck,....if I don't like them,.....well then I haven't spent any money.

Today was a about the most perfect day to go riding. So my buddy Kickstand and I went out for a scenic cruise to the village of Northville for breakfast. But on the ride out there I noticed that my right stirrup touched down on several riht hand curves. OK, not a big deal, I'll deal with it when I get home.

But before I got home, it happened! Coming out of a steep driveway and onto a sharp left hand turn,....my left stirrup dug into the pavement and my rear tire was on a tarstrip. Might have given it a bit more throttle,...but all I can remember was sliding then trying to (over) correct. Then I went down hard on my left side.

An off duty cop saw what had happened and kept me from trying to get myself up and called for the police and EMS. Yep,...coming down hard on my left side broke my ninth rib and left clavicle. And it hurt!

The off duty cop called my wife, and I was taken to Oakwood Hospital on a back-board and restraining collar.

My wife left work and came to the accindent scene, just as the ambulance took me away. She was able to access the damage and rode my bike home. She then came to the emergency room and assisted the doctors and nurses with my disrobing and helping me to sit upright, and with my medical history and prescriptions that I'm currently on.

Home now but NO MORE RIDING for this season. This is gonna suck sooo bad!

Momz,

This post you wrote was tough to read.  I hate hearing when folks go down and worse, get hurt.  Sorry to hear the bad news.  I just installed some kuryakyn pegs that have the flip down stirrups..   http://www.kuryakyn.com/index.cfm/go/Home.ProductDetail/catID/18/scID/46/IMID/951   I hope these weren't the ones that you had trouble with.  I watched how these pegs would get close to the ground in the turns out in the passes and never hit...

I remember talking to Tad and InZane about his bike(I believe that is his name).  He is from Canada (British Columbia) and he didn't have any highway pegs on his bike.  Come to find out one of his buddies got into a bad motorcycle accident and the cause was determined to be his highway peg was the first to touch before anything else which when it hit it caused the bike to lift the front wheel off the ground and then it flipped him over the bike and off the side of the road.   He told me that the crash bars are designed to "slide" on the pavement and your highway peg if it hits first will want to dig in.  So, he said if you really want to know what part of your bike is going to touch the ground first, take a piece of plywood and shove one side of the board up against the side of the front and rear wheels and then lift up the board until it hits some part of the bike.  It should hit your regular pegs and they should fold up and then your crash bars..

I learned a lot from this guy... Very nice fella and he shed some light on how our bike is designed to "lay down".

Thanks Tad wherever you are my friend.

Momz, your in my prayers glad it wasn't anything worse.  Sounds like your being well taken care of  cooldude

Sorry you got hurt........people have laughed at me, but I fold them puppies up when not on the highway going straight and level so that cant happen.  Do the stirrup thinggys you put on keep the pegs from folding up?  I ask because, if I wasnt so cheap I would have tried them already too, but I have never seen just how they work.

Chris if your asking about the ones i put on... yes they are part of the peg and flip down.  They fold with the peg.  I have yet to scrape my highway pegs.  I have mine on the front wheel side of the crash bars and so they are a ways out there and it looks like the peg will hit before the stirrup.  I am going to do the plywood test later this week..

Thank you all for your good thoughts and prayers.

However I've learned a hard lesson and I hope that my incident helps to put a perspective on our bikes, riding styles and the parts that we install on our bikes.

I put on the stirrups that fit Kury ISO Pegs.
I used a Kury P-clamp and the offset mounts to bring back the pegs to accomidate my "Dwarf Like" legs. However my pegs still weren't back far enough to keep my boots from bouncing/sliding off the highway pegs.

So the lesson that I learned was,....if your "pegs" touch down too soon,....You are going to touch down also.
You can always rearrange your pegs or by purchace new ones,....but bones don't "rearrange and you can't just replace the broken ones"

Oh, before I forget,....I want to publicly thank my wife for putting up with me, my obsessions, and for sharing my enthusiasim for my motorcycle passion.
