A woman, living in a section 8 apartment, has 3 kids of her own, and oldest daughter with 2 kids also living with her. She also supports her alcoholic father....
Ok, now you know a little about her. She doesnt work, because she cant afford daycare. She is doing college classes online which, the US of A is paying for, she gets almost 500$ a month in food stamps and twice that is cash.

3 days ago, she hit the lottery for $ 250,000.00. Not the mega load but still, a good bit of cash.

Here is what she did with it.

2010 mercedes SL 550
$10,000.00 at KAY jewelers...
paid off all her rent-a-center furniture,
$3500.00 at pearl vision center for those "custom" beauty frames
took all her family to Disney for a week.

Ok, I dont know how you feel...but I believe that she was a bit irresponsible.

Oh, BTW, I am going to wait til winter to look for a new valkyrie. There, its valk related.

Not at all surprising. She has no concept of how to manage money. I live in a town where at least 25 percent on the population are 2nd and 3rd generation welfare families. It's all they know, and in some cases it's all they want to know. They somehow believe they have earned the right to the checks they receive every month and they have learned how to milk the system. It is almost a cottage industry, I've overheard conversations where they give one another tips. Until and unless you have experienced these people and their thought processes it is hard to comprehend why anyone would want to live this way.

The only good thing was paying off the furniture she had been renting.  I imagine she did not have enough money left to buy all new?  Grin   Cry

I understand......she HAD to spend the money fast, see if she put any of it in the bank she would loose her support.  I knew someone that used to live in income based housing.  Rent is adjusted every month by how much you make.........other support like for food and such is also recalculated if you come into money.

For that lady she probably would have lost all support.  So she had to make a choice.  Is this money long term or is it short term....."can it get me off the system or not?"  If NOT, then shes GOT to blow it fast

I dont agree with how our system works, thats just how it is for some people

Chris is exactly right. This woman lives here near me. And it is truly a shame that she has spent her entire life on welfare, never worked. Teaching her daughter with kids of her own that its ok ...

My wife has some kinfolk in Deep East Texas.   The lady has lived on welfare her entire life, free foodstamps, free rent, and other govt freebies.....that I know of she has never had a job  She has a son that a couple yrs ago got hurt at a neighbors house requireing some heavy medical repairs.   She then sued the neighbors homeowners insurance for damages and was awarded $25,000.   The pissed off neighbor called the govt agencies and told them she had come into some money and the govt confiscated the money saying that if you come into money you have to pay the govt back for back free rent.   She was furious and called us on a tirage complaining......no pity here and I told her so.....she got mad a me and won't talk with me or my wife anymore.....man....if I had known it was THAT EASY to get rid of her I'd have done it a long time ago....ha.

I knew a guy many years ago who won around 500 grand the same way. He quit his job at the foundry. He bought a nice house on a lake. (less than $80,000 here in those days) Then his family started asking him for loans. Within 2 years he was back at the plant. Within 3 he had lost the house because he couldn't pay the taxes on it.

But both the guy I knew and probably the women in the story did quite a lot to stimulate their local economies for a little while.

Sometimes winning or inheriting money is the worst thing that can happen to a particular person. Another plant I was at had a janitor who was obliviously "drug damaged". I talked to him frequently so I finally asked him “what happened?” How'd you get like this? He said that not long after high school he inherited a pretty large sum of money. He bought a used car and he and a buddy went on a party spree. The next thing he knew it was 6 months later and he was broke with no car and no friends in Florida so he hitched a ride back home and that was his story.

I was homeless for a week in Phoenix in the mid 70’s. I had a job as a welder but had split with the lady I moved there with and was sleeping on a picnic table in a park (North Mountain?)  till my next pay check. It was kind of fun at 20 years old in a warm climate. I met several people then who I’m sure lived that way till they died.

Fast forward 30 years and part of my job was to keep an abandoned building “in the hood” my company owned free of “homesteaders” and party types. They would find a new way to break-in almost daily. We would secure it and they would find another. They even climbed trees for roof access and then entered the building through the ruined roof.

A co-worker and I would search the unlit plant including the semi-flooded basement weekly. (armed only with a hammer, company policy you know) Sometimes they built fires on the floor overnight and you never knew what you would find. Bottles under the downspouts to catch water (drinking water?), paraphernalia. Beds made of cardboard and dirty blankets, and always empty liquor bottles.

Although it was always good to get out of the plant and the adrenalin of going though that building with a flashlight was fun I was glad when we finally got it demolished. And I was always aware of the absurdly of having this duty when I had been sleeping on a picnic table myself all those years ago.

Someone once said that if you were to take all the world's wealth and distribute it evenly across the population, within 10 years, the people that had originally been rich would be rich again and the people that had been destitute would again be destitute.  The only thing that I have come to doubt is that it would take 10 years.

I've heard that a high percentage of big lottery winners are bankrupted within three years, but I've not researched it for myself.

Maybe someone else knows whether that is supported?

Flame, flame, flame, from the left.  Shocked

Wife's cousin is a school psychologist and has to do testing for those deemed "slow". He has grown to hate his job but only has a couple years to retire. He has told me on several occasions that certain students are taught how to "fail" the test so they can stay on the hook with the gov't freebies. You goota love it. And they think their not getting repirations.
