Hi, I have an American Valk here in the UK. It is a full california, 1998 1500c. The Clymer hand book says this californian model has a 26 litre fuel tank(6.9 american gallons). Are all californian models fitted with this size tank or are some fitted with the 5.3 gallon tank. And if so is there anyway of telling without running the thing dry.thank you.

First off....welcome to the site! There is a lot here for you to learn. Go to the Shop Talk section and look around in there for most of the answers to your questions.
You didn't include whether your Valk was a Standard, Tourer, or Interstate. Regardless, you can simply Google what it is and get your answer.

I Googled 1998 Honda Valkyrie specs and got this:
http://www.motorcyclenews.com/mcn/bikereviews/searchresults/bike-reviews/honda/honda-f6c-valkyrie-1996-2006/

We need pictures of your bike!

If its a 1998 then it has a 5.3 gallon tank unless someone put on an interstate tank. I/S tanks are 6.9 but they didnt come out til 1999.

+1

Std and tourers    5.3 gal.

IS       6.9 gal.

Only exception would be if put a IS tank on a std, like me!  Love it!

Might need to change the seat if OEM.  The OEm std seat goes over the rear of the std tank, need one that does not. The IS tank mounts the same.  It does have a fuel sender in the bottom, so if you want a gauge, you need to get one.  I did get a Motosen, love it.  If not, then BigBF has a plate with oring to replace the sender with.  Or, you could just leave the sender in the tank, and not hook it up.  IF the sender comes with the tank.

Move your fill cap with lock over from your std tank, that way the key is the same.

And, then you will probably have to paint it to match.  Black, or red/black are the only colors where the tank color is the same.

That is it.  Bolts in the same.  Petcock the same, etc.

The extra 1.6 gallons is ALL USABLE, so it it a GREAT range extender.  I think it is the best add on I have.

What color is your bike? Good tanks usually run $8-900, plus paint.

std/tourer are actually listed for 5.25 gallons, OK I WAS WRONG, DON'T KNOW WHERE I GOT 5.25 FROM
20 L  which =  5.28 gal  is the correct size, some magazines did round up to 5.3 gal

it will take 5.5 gal if filled to the top, should only be done if the bike will be ridden right after to bring the level down below the metal lip level which allows for expansion from the sun. Or for winter storage.
I/S listed 6.9 gallons will take 7 gallons with same above procedure.

I have the I/S tank on my std/tourer, its the tank they all should have come with from the factory, she's a big girl and it just looks right

I agree, CA.  I think the IS tank on my std. looks great.  As you say, the Valk is a big bike, and the IS tank looks just right on there.  They ALL should have came with the big tank.

Maybe if the IS had come out at the same time as the stds, they might have.

Doesn't look like an IS tank.

Actually it does. It is taller at the back of the tank like the I/S. The smaller tank slopes quickly in the back. Flipping it over gives the best indication.

And the part # listed on the auction, comes up, as an interstate part.   Wink

Aren't the two creases on the tank top, only,,, on interstate tanks?   coolsmiley

MP - What was required for the tank switch (my question mark key does not work)

If you want to type a question mark, hold down the ALT key while typing on the numeric keypad, 063, the ASCII code for "?" on the character code map.  (the char code map is in your "accessories" menu on a windows O.S.   Check the "advanced view" and the decimal equiv of the hex value is given on the status line)  Otherwise, the numbers given on the char map are in hex, which you can convert to decimal using the windows calculator in "programmer's" mode.  (You have to use the decimal equiv to access the characters on the keypad) You can also impress everybody on the internet when you can enter the actual degrees sign, "°".  That's 0176.  Note the character map changes with different fonts.  You can find some interesting characters in other fonts, but here you have to use the native font to the board.

On the "IS tank" listed above, the pic on the underside doesn't look like my IS tank.  Mine has a large hole with 4 studs in a square formation around it, for the gauge sending unit.  I made a plate for a friend's tank, to cover the hole, it was the same as mine.  Though the tank in the pics does seem to have a proper shape for an IS tank. In the under pic, it looks like there's SOMETHING where the sending unit hole is.  Just a funny-looking cover? I see an indentation and it appears TWO cap nuts not four.  Did they change the sending unit hole?
