Went for a little ride this evening and received a text so pulled over to reply. Put down the kick stand to kill the engine but neglected to turn off the ignition. It was still light enough I didn't notice the lights on. The two driving lights as well as the headlight was on. By the time the texting was done about 7 to 10 minutes passed. When I tried to restart the engine seemed to crank at it's normal speed but would not start. Ran down the battery after several attempts waiting a couple of minutes between trying. Finally pushed it to a small down hill slope and got up enough speed to start it in 3rd gear. It didn't start easily but fired and jerked several times before catching (to my great relief because I was in the middle of no where almost). Was the battery drained enough in the short time I was texting or would that set of conditions cause flooding or something? Time for a new battery? Obviously I'll try to remember not to do that again.
Thanks, Mike

I'd get the battery load tested were I you. If your battery is old you might want to replace it anyway.

Especially with the driving lights on. They seem to have a hell of a draw. Next time ya have to push start the bike, when it starts jerking pull the clutch in and give the engine a chance to fire on all 6. PS: I usually hold the throttle a tad harder than when it is trying to start. When it comes alive she will add some R's to the tach real quick.

As was said. If the battery is 4 yrs old or more, get a new one and put a FULL CHARGE on it before you put it into service. If you keep the battery you have now, get a battery charger on it ASAP (if you havent already) its not good to go yet just because you ran it on the alternator. It is down and will not live long without a full charge

Fully charge battery-trickle might be best-have load tested BUT that 4 year old suggestion sounds like the way to go. And what you did to put yer ass in a crack-don't do dat no mo. RIDE SAFE.

May be you should have called instead of texted. Might have taken you 90 seconds and saved your battery. Sorry, I am an old fart and very slow to embrace all this texting, texting language and smartphone crap.

+1 on the new battery. $100 (or less) to remove "juice anxiety"? Well worth the investment in my book.

See what happens, I hate texting ! It doesn't take long to drain such a little battery. I'm kinda surprised that it didn't start upon releasing the button, once the starter drain is stopped there is usually enough little electrons floating around to allow the ignition to work.

Pushing 70 myself I understand about adopting some of this new fangled stuff. I'm deaf for all practical purposes and have been most of my life. To me text on a cell phone is my only option and provides a degree of freedom by being able to stay in touch. Wouldn't ride without it. Thanks to all for the advice about a battery. I'll get a new one. The bike starts so well and quickly I guess I just thought the battery had to be good. I was just curious if what I did had caused another problem of some sort due to heat on the carbs or something. Thanks.

Makes you wonder about the secondary condition,,,, did you leave the petcock on where normally it would be off with the bike shut down?? ...... or possibly by that time there was not enough juice in the battery to reliably fire the ignition at the RPM you were getting on the downhill.....
If it is not a gas thing,, I would not worry about it.

I would worry about the battery. Suspect it is time for a new Yuasa.

My rule of thumb is that if the battery ever goes below 10 volts, it needs to be replaced. It may work after that, but I won't trust it.

The petcock was on while I texted and the engine seemed to spin as fast as it normally does, just wouldn't fire. I'm going to check the battery, see if there is a date on it first and unless it's relatively new I'm just getting a new battery. Didn't get a chance today to recreate the conditions but might tomorrow. In my driveway though

Go to Amazon. Search for a CTEK 3300. Buy it and use it frequently. You won't regret it.

Just use the key to kill it. Good habit and it'll save you battery.
