I'm assuming it is a STD or Tourer.
Did you check the gear on the front wheel?
They can get screwed up pretty easy on a tire change and etc.

The drive gear on the axle is plastic. Pull the wheel and check it. I regrease it with every tire change.

Its one of 3 things 1. cable 2. drive 3. speedo head
Like the guys said, its probably the drive. Has the front wheel been off recently ?

I check the wheel drive unit by mounting the cable to it and leaving the top end off the speedo. Secure it to something so yer lookin right down at the end.. Then roll the bike a few feet n' see if the cable is turnin at all? Lets ya know zactly,, where,,,,, da problem is..............

Front wheel has not been off since I bought the bike a couple years ago. I'll try pulling it back off the speedo and then rolling it forward to check cable operation. How hard is it to replace the speedo part? Can I just replace a gear or something?

Unscrew the cable from the back of the speedo. See if you can spin it. If you can, cable or gear is broke. If not, it's the head. Cable and gear are replaceable. Easy peasy.

He already replaced the cable. Yes either are easy and the hardest part about changing the head will be paying for it

So, you replaced the cable ? Was it broken ?
It hard to see if the drive is working just by moving or spinning the wheel by hand. Disconnect it from the head and go for a ride. If the cable then turns, the head is bad. Since the cable is new [and if its installed correctly] and if it doesn't turn then the drive is bad.
Don't over tighten the drive retainer screw.

I just assumed it was the cable and ordered one. Drive on front wheel looked good when I replaced the cable. I think it's the speedometer itself.
