Has anyone had the bearing in the clutch lifter plate ( throwout brg) go bad? I still have a roughness and noise coming from the clutch area until I pull in the clutch lever and then it gets quiet and the roughness goes away. It seems that when you put tension on the throwout brg so that the clutch disengages is when the noise would manifest itself. But not so. I have pulled the slave cyl and lubed the pushrod but that didn't make any difference. Running in oil it seems the brg wouldn't go bad, so any one had issues with it? Thanks for any input here. Jaybird.

Is this only when idling in neutral?

Well, I hear a noise similar to that on the road so I am wondering if that could be where it is coming from. I have tried pulling in the clutch and coasting to see if any change and also pulling in the clutch and hitting the kill switch while moving but can't seem to tell much change. I recently did the rear end lube maintenance and pulled the u-joint with all looking ok. The wheel brgs were smooth front and rear, not too loose and no catches. I am not sure about tire noise though, just put on Dunlop E3s.

Had a set of E3's on my GW, they were the loudest tires I've ever had on any bike I've owned.

To answer Bigheads question, the noise and roughness is very evident at idle in neutral. I was wondering if that throw out brg has failed for anyone. And I do wonder about those E3 tires as road surface changes also changes the noise somewhat. I have a ride to Kansas over memorial day weekend and Inzane right on the heels of that. So no nasty surprises wanted.

I don't know if there is a true "throwout bearing". Most Valks make some noise at idle with the clutch out and in neutral. But, I have never heard any clutch noise in gear and running down the road. There is some gear 'whine" while moving.

As Mitch stated both of my Valks in neutral at idle kinda make a rattling sound but when you pull in the clutch lever that smooth out. My 97 (I bought it new) has done it since day one and is more pronounced than my 99 IS. But hear no noise under load other than the tranny whine that they all have.

I have a 97 that does the same thing, loud whirling bearing noise while idling in neutral, the minute you slip it in gear it goes away...there is no throw out bearing, the only thing I thought it might be is the small bearing at the rear of the transmission where the slave cyl. connects, you would have to remove the back plate on the trans to replace it...me I've been living with it for about a year now with no problems, I figure if it lets go I'll replace it then...

Highbinder and Bighead, thanks for your experience and input. Sounds pretty much like mine, so since no one has had issues with the bearing I am suspecting the noise is from the tires or something that may be vibrating. Puts me to ease that it may well not be mechanical. Jaybird.
