i got a good deal on the exhaust, they do have some rust and blueing. i hope some blue remover can help, but the rust will have to be painted. and as of now i don't want the spend a lot having it powder-coated. Are there any header paints (rattle can) that are better than others?

How bad is the rust? I bought a set of saddle bag rails and the underside had been scraped where the bike had been dropped. I sprayed Ospho on it where the rust was starting. Waited until the rust turned black (iron oxide) then clear coated from a rattle can. Haven't had any rust problems since. I don't know if the ospho will work on exhaust, but I'm pretty sure the clear coat will not, unless you can find a high temp clear coat.
There are other exhaust paints that might do the trick.

Rust I got rid of a couple of spots with 600-800 emery cloth. The previous owner decided to melt down gym shoes on the pipes; it was the only thing that would remove the age-old burnt crust. It will dull the shine's brilliance, slightly; try it before you paint & see what you think.

I don't want to hi-jack blacat's thread, but just a note on how to remove melted stuff like plastic shopping bags, shoe sole, etc... Use crumbled up Aluminium Foil.
It won't dull or scratch
the chrome and will take every bit of it off.

Acetone and a little elbow grease will do the job also. Been there done that.

spray oven cleaner on cold pipes and let sit overnight, then wipe off. Works like a charm
And yes, I know this thread is 3 years old.
