I purchased a 2001 Tourer last March. The bike began running very rich took it to a Honda mechanic in Southern MD and he used an ultrasound machine to clean the carbs. Brought it home and it was still running rich, plugs sooty, blue smoke, back firing at times. Used Seafoam as suggested before and after and that still didn't help. Was only getting about 95 if lucky 100 miles to the tank of gas. Just recently I had a mechanic replace two diaphrams that had holes in them and he also completely replaced all gaskets from the Red Eye kit including pilot screws in addition to synchronize carburetor. Bike is still running rich and popping during acceleration and deceleration. I am pulling my hair out. I want this bike to run like my husband's Interstate! Come on I need help and I want to enjoy riding this bike.

Mine was running very rich too. I changed to a K&N filter WITH the pre filter and now its puurfect. Mine was rich because of Cobra pipes and no jetting.....now its the fastest 97 around........but thats because its a '97 and its a red and white  |

Assuming your mechanic went through all six carbs, checked float levels etc. Vacuum lines and orings good? Original exhaust system and jets? Look for modifications that may have been done, intake and exhaust leaks, fuel tank venting well, enrichment valve system OK,,, I would make sure of all that stuff first. It can be fixed, let us know!

When your mechanics worked on the carbs did they check the main jet sizes? Maybe previous owner went up in size.

ok guys, good info. I will ask these questions to the mechanic who did the work. I will let you know what he says. the only mod that I am aware of is the piggies have been shortened on the exhaust system. not sure if this would cause my problem.

Cutting the piggies wont change the way it runs. If you don't find answers soon, give us a more detailed history of this problem and we can figure it out.

As mentioned above...check the choke (enrichment) sliders and make sure they are working (and off when the choke is off)...also check the petcock diaphragm, and the intake runner o-rings.

Be sure the pilots are open 1 3/4 to 2 turns. I have seen exactly your issue when the pilots have been opened wayyyyyy too far

ok, we are leaning towards the enrichment valve sticking open. mechanic will check that tomorrow. since I got this bike I have never had to engage the choke no matter how cold it was outside, and we live in Maryland where it does get cold.

Okay guys - I have zero explanation ! I went to take my girl to the mechanic this morning with my husband following ~ one mile from home I told him to go back home I was going for a long ride - she was purring like a kitten. Stopped at the gas station and put in 3.59 gallons of gas and rode for an hour. She never once back fired on the deceleration. Never hesitated as I was getting it 1 - 5 ! All I can say is my mechanic is a great friend of ours - owns a Valk himself and was so patient with us. So as of today let me tell you I am riding a happy girl again.
